WTH devices, entities organisation (categories)

For some time now we can group our automations and scripts into categories. This allows us to show them in neat collapsible groups in the UI, which is very nice.

Unfortunately it is still not possible to do it for devices and entities. Those can only be grouped by predefined things like area or integration, etc.

I propose we add entity and device categories, to allow us to group them however we want.

You can use Labels.

Agreed…

I have not found one single case where labels do not only provide the same functionality but exceed it in multiple ways. They’re just flat out more flexible.(and you can sort on them practically everywhere and you can filter and trigger based on them while categories can’t.)

Went ham on the labeling one weekend and now I have over 200 labels in the system. (hint labels are awesome when you start with LLM driven voice assistants…)

I feel like you both are not understanding my request.

I use labels a lot. But you cannot group entities nor devices based on labels.

Go here and check which options are available for grouping (using the button in the top right corner).

You can neither sort nor group based on labels anywhere in the UI. The only thing you can do with them is filter.

Use the Filters:

I don’t want to filter, I want to group and sort.

If a entity has multiple labels, which one should it be sorted by?

FYI this is what @arturpragacz is talking about

It should not be sorted by labels, as that makes no sense. That is why this topic is not about labels, but categories.

I want to be able to group those entities and devices pages just like it is today possible with automations, scripts and helpers pages.
