Request:
Have the ability to export a file for each - Areas, Categories, Labels etc. So that they can later be re-imported in a new system/setup.
Use Case:
I will be moving to a new house early next summer. I am taking the opportunity to rebuild a new Home Assistant instance from scratch that will better fit the new location. Since I’ve spent a lot of time planning all these items and that I am already familiar with them, I would love the ability to export files from my current system to later import them in the new instance. Going a step further, it would be nice to be able to select during the import the item that we want to keep for the new system.
Would restoring a backup only bring in these items?
It seems like Home Assistant is looking to ease the learning curve and setup for users at any level, digging in the .storage folder is not really an easy task. I would think that building a simple Export/Import would be more mainstream for users at any level.
I agree about the selective import / selective backup.
I’m a teacher and with the different “online classroom” apps I’ve been through, all of them had a selective import when copying from one year to another. Super useful. My use case would be just to give my whole system a refresh/rebuild and be able to selectively go through everything but not re-build everything by hand.
