It would be useful to be able to control Apple Home devices through the Home Assistant iOS app.
I understand most people will say I should add devices to Home Assistant and use the HomeKit Bridge integration and I agree. That is what I mostly do. But for instance, the smart bulbs I have in my bedroom (Nanoleaf Essentials) only allow you to set “power loss recovery” from the Nanoleaf app when the bulb is added directly to HomeKit. So I keep them outside of Home Assistant so I am not woken up if my power flickers overnight.
I also have some motion detectors (Onvis Motion that use Bluetooth) that work perfectly when added to HomeKit and are very unreliable through Home Assistant (even when close to my Raspberry Pi or an ESPHome bluetooth proxy). So for the time being I use HomeKit for automations with these.
This would also be a low barrier to entry way that new Home Assistant users could get involved. Essentially a newbie could keep their existing Apple HomeKit system as-is and utilize Home Assistant for more powerful automations. This may be a more manageable step towards becoming dedicated Home Assistant users in the future.
I don’t want it to seem like I expect a volunteer to spend their time implementing this change for me when I could just shell out a couple bucks for some Home Assistant-friendly bulbs and sensors, but I think the addition of this capability to the iOS app would benefit a lot of users, so WTH, why not propose it?
Is there something I am overlooking as a non-programmer?
Thanks for your input!
