I generally prefer the statistics graph to view data such as temperature, humidity, etc. However, it is also very useful to see it as shown in the History graph because you can see when the datapoints came in and how frequently. Sometimes I end up having both graphs taking up a lot of dashboard space to show the same data. It would be great to have a card that can do both, and can switch between one view and the other via a simple toggle on the chart itself.
FYI: The more info card for entities will use the statistics graph in 2022.12.
The History panel will be the only place you can see state graphs.
Personally I think the loss of resolution is a bad thing and will be removing LTS for the majority of my sensors.
@tom_l - I am not sure I understand what you mean… The history graph shows the data points taken but it is not fully representative of reality unless you live in a Minecraft world
If you compare the statistics graph to the history graph you’ll see that other than a minor time shift, it is more realistic given the interpolation. I am sure that there are better interpolation methods than the one used to handle temperature data but this is good enough for casual “how hot/cold” is it use.
In an industrial setting, I would prefer to see the exact data points if they are part of a control process but in Home Assistant I really only need to see them when troubleshooting something. Also, “resolution” is the smallest change you can measure which is generally determined by the sensor, signal conditioning and Analog to Digital converter (ADC) therefore the graph won’t impact that. “Accuracy” is how close what HA shows is to the measured value. I can’t tell with certainty whether there is any relevant accuracy loss when comparing the graphs so that tells me it is “good enough” and since it is both more visually appealing and representative of reality given we live in an analog world, I prefer that view.
My WTH was just proposing an easy way to switch between the two views. The user would pick the default view. The snapshot I have above is an example of where I needed to see the raw data from patio and outdoor sensors as they are exactly in the same spot and I wanted to see which one works better but I really would prefer not to have it on screen all the time. In many cases I resort to additional views for this… I am at about 50 views
So would I, but in future you will not have this in the more info pop-up. You only get the low resolution LTS statistics graph.
I mean the fact that the devs do not want to give us choice in what we can display means that your WTH has zero chance of success.
@tom_l - I’ve never used the pop up to see the raw data so I guess I won’t miss it. If the history graph were to go away, I am sure some awesome developer will fill the gap… plus I believe there are already many alternative options which I am exploring.
I am also using Grafana more and more for my testing since you can do so much more with the data and display.
Thinking about it, a convoluted way I can achieve what I ask for in the WTH would be to have 2 cards but only display one with a conditional card. I need to look into it to see how messy it gets to do it.
2022.11 is a big update but now entity card become a piece of crap.
Thank you guys! (sarcasm)
I would prefer to see the exact data points or have an ability to switch to old style graphs…
