WTH: why can't I have images instead of icons in the sidebar / toolbar

I would love to be able to have custom images in the side bar / toolbar menus in place of icons.

It would be way more customisable and flexible for all.

I know I can achieve some of this with a theme but it’s quite cumbersome and difficult.
