WTH Why can't we stream to airplay? Only to privacy-sensitive googles chromecast

We like privacy first, so no chromecast in our home. But a lot of Apple with airplay. Why can’t home assistant stream to them?

If you don’t want to wait around for an Airplay integration, you can install a custom component. Airplay will never be “official” as Apple license Airplay to hardware manufacturers, not open source software developers.

In any case, Shairport Sync will get the job done from linux and here’s a version for Home Assistant:

Never heard of Shairpoint. Does it support video/photo?

QOUTE FROM BELOW LINK
Shairpoint sync does not support Airplay Video or Photo streaming

Cool! But I do not mean to be rude…since it’s not an official integration: how do I know that someone didn’t made some creepy backdoor to the internet when installing this hacs custom integration? Can I trust this?

The source is public on GitHub and there’s not much of it. Take a look or have someone else take a look at it for you.

Yes, audio only. There are solutions to receiving AirPlay video for different platforms, but none I’m aware of for sending.

You might be able to work around this using a third-party app on AppleTV, and using DLNA Server on Home Assistant.

Or set up Plex server and the Plex app on AppleTV and control that from HA.

Rpiplay does video + aufio

Unfortunately, no, that project is the exact opposite of what’s needed. The “server” (seems like a misnomer right?) is the receiving/playback device hence why it’s called RPiPlay - it’s a playback solution for RPi.

then go with this

Now someone just has to make a docker version that’s compatible with Home Assistant. I didn’t find any info on whether it’s still compatible with newer devices - it was last updated 7 years ago, which is long before AirPlay2 came out.

well then why not go with the solution that comes included with HA?

says:

Basic support for streaming video and audio with AirPlay

works fine with my ATV.

Making a docker image out of the Client project is a matter of writing 10 lines max

That’s relevant for the OP, who mentioned it’s not working. Maybe it broke (again) with tvOS 16? I know audio is working as HA sends TTS to one of my HomePods daily.
