My ISP has been crappy these days meaning my internet drops out (WiFi/LAN stays up)
Whenever that happens I need to reboot my laptop server that’s running HA, and sometimes I even need to reconnect the gateway, reset the wireless communications protocol key and reconfigure it.
It’s super annoying and my wife is getting sick of the lights constantly not working.
Is there any way to protect against this (aside from figuring out my internet connection problems which is a separate issue)?
I’m in Australia and willing to invest in a different Zigbee bridge if it’s compatible with Xiaomi Aqara devices and will survive an internet dropout.
The gateway shouldn’t be doing that. I can reboot my router and /or my HA server without it causing those issues to my Xiaomi gateway.
Have you made sure there aren’t config issues?
Having said that, I don’t know if I have ever tried using the lights while the router is internet is down, BUT others on here have used firewall rules to block the Xiaomi gateway from having internet access (including myself at one stage, which reminds me I need to set that up again ) without any disruption to the gateway’s local functionality.
It happens to me too. If the network (wifi, specifically, because the Xiaomi gateway is a wifi only device) goes down but HASS is still running HASS will attempt a few retries (configurable) and then give up. I don’t know long a retry takes, but there’s no delay in between them. And once it gives up, as best as I can tell, you have to restart HASS to get it to try again. Annoying indeed. Especially since the Xiaomi hub sends a multicasted heartbeat that could be used to indicate it was online again and ready to go.
Hmm I can’t imagine what config issues could be messing with it.
I did some research and found people suggesting blocking the gateway’s internet access, but when I did that my sensors and switches stopped working altogether and I had to pair the gateway to my router manually again. I’ll try experiment with that a little further if it works for others.
Thanks for this advice. I got myself the Zigbee sniffer and the flashing tools, and the Zigbee2MQTT project has allowed me to finally ditch the Xiaomi Gateway. That’s nice not just because it solves my original issue, but I never liked the idea of relying on internet connectivity and questionable links to China.
The only problem I have is that it links all of my devices except for one Aqara wall double switch.
