Z-Wave and Zigbee Dongles don't work together

Hi all,

I am new to Home Assistant and so far I am very happy with my choice. I am currently migrating my Smart Home from a different system to HA.

I am running HA on a raspberry pi 4 with a AEON Labs ZW090 Z-Stick Gen5 EU and have 34 Devices included so far. That went very smooth.

Now I also got a new Conbee 2 Stick since I also own several Zigbee Devices which I obviously want to include in HA.

I got Zigbee it to work with the ZHA integration and I was able to include a few devices already.

However after a reboot my Z-Wave network is stopped and would not start up again. Zigbee still works fine.

Zigbee is connected and configured via:
/dev/serial/by-id/usb-dresden_elektronik_ingenieurtechnik_GmbH_ConBee_II_DE2228756-if00

Z-Wave:
/dev/serial/by-id/usb-0658_0200-if00

What am I’m doing wrong? Please help

Ia the Aeotec stick directly plugged into a USB 3 port? The Pi 4 is known to have problems with the Aeotec stick because it doesn’t comply to the USB standards. You could try putting the Aeotrc stick on a powered usb 2 hub.

Thanks, @Burningstone totally fergot to mention. I am running it on a powered USB Hub already. The Conbee is plugged directly ito a USB2 Port on the Pi

You may be getting interference from each to each other. It is HIGHLY recommended to put the the Deconz stick on a 10ft extension cable to get it away from the pi and other devices. I would try putting both devices on a 10ft usb 2.0 cable extension to get rid of any interference they may be having.

Looks like your stick doesn’t exist according to the driver, what does /var/log/messages say?

I don’t think that is likely at all. the zwave & zigbee radios work on a completely different frequency.

and I literally have two zwave radios (Aeotec & HUSBZB-1) & two zigbee radios (HUSBZB-1 & CC2531) all within six inches of each other connected directly to the same NUC and I don’t have issues.

It’s possible that the zigbee radio could get interference from the 2.4GHZ wifi tho since they both run at the same frequency. Which is why people recommend putting them on a USB extension to get them away from other 2.4GHZ signals (but I haven’t ever had any issues with that either).

But the OP isn’t having any issue with zigbee. It’s the zwave stick that’s the problem.

I occasionally have this issue as well with my Conbee 2 and my UZB1 stick. The Conbee always works but when both are plugged in, the UZB1 fails. I still have yet to figure out what the actual issue is and have tried USB 3.0 and 2.0 hubs to no avail. Also tried having one in each of the USB ports. Have you tried the extension? I haven’t yet.

So far I tried every possible combination of USB Slots, USB HUB and Dongles. What seems to work (at least its stable since yesterday) is to plug the Conbee 2 directly into a USB2.0 of the Raspberry and the Z-Wave Stick into a USB3.0 Slot via powered USB2.0 Hub.

Since then I did multiple reboots and restarts and everything seems to work. I dont know what is going on :frowning: I will test for another few days and let you guys know if the issue is fixed.

Thanks so far for replying and trying to help me

I’d still put the ConBee on an extension cord to avoid interference from USB 3.0 ports (it sounds unreal but USB 3 can cause interference with ZigBee, Intel nublished an article about this some time ago, see here.

Second this. I just ran into this as well. I’m running my system on a Pi4 with a zwave.me UZB plugged into the USB 2.0 on a powered hub and a Conbee II into the other 2.0 port. I had to put the UZB and hub far away from the Pi and the Conbee. Yesterday I migrated the same Pi4 over to a SSD over USB setup and 64bit HassOS. I was having so much trouble with the Conbee and devices until I put it on an extension cable and put it far away from the Pi.
