Z-wave Ceiling Fan Control

I just installed a new ceiling fan with all new wiring. I will have control over the light and fan separately. Now I’m looking at z-wave fan controls

Opinions on the HomeSeer HS-FC200+ and GE Enbrighten Z-Wave Plus Smart Fan Control 14287?

Also found the Inovelli Red Series Fan + Light Switch which looks really good. Anyone use one of these yet?

I’ve got 3 Inovelli devices and as I continue to build out my smart home I will continue to buy more. The devices are innovative and their management/development team is actively involved in the various home automation communities. One downside I’ve noticed is they are a new brand and I find they seem to be having issues keeping up with demand.

Also, I wouldn’t suggest trying Inovelli devices unless you’re already switched to OpenZWave (Beta) integration. Because their devices are so new they are not working 100% out of the box on the integrated Z-wave platform built on OZW 1.4.

Define not working 100%? Is it a matter of just manually updating the zwconfig file or is HA not correctly communicating with the device, kind of like the fibaro smart implant and all of its problems?

Last I checked you had to manually download the openZwave config files and backport the 1.6 XML to the 1.4 format. This effort was completed for the switches but I am not sure if it is done with the Light/Fan Controller or the Illumin bulbs.

I am looking at the Inovelli Z-Wave Fan & Light Switch (Red Series) | ZWave Fan Control & Light Dimmer myself right now.

My wiring only has one romex line to the ceiling and i need a switch that has a controller that would hide in the ceiling to control both the ceiling fan and light from one switch.

If anyone has any other recommendations, I would be glad to hear them

This is the way two of our fans are (incorrectly, in my opinion) wired. For now, rather than rewiring and snaking more cable to the switch box, I went the easy way and got a Bond Bridge. https://bondhome.io/

Both our fan units already had IR units in them, so once we trained the Bond it works perfectly and integrates with HA well.

That is a neat sugguestion. Wish i could use it but our fan doesnt have IR and the current Lutron switch i have in there is failing so im exploring options.

This is the switch i currently have that is failing - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0017O3O6U/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Okay, it’s a slow work from home day so you got me curious! I see how that works. I guess if you can’t find a Z-wave switch that behaves like that, you could a Bond or IR controller with a simple fan module like this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00W5UC7B8

Then just wire up the wall with a standard switch that would cut power to the entire fan completely or just a cover plate with the wires connected. That is what I did with ours and use control the fan with voice or HA on our phones only.

Thanks for that suggestion. Nice to have other options

One other option if you want to consider it is Insteon. Their FanLinc device fits inside the canopy and speaks RF over the air and also over the building’s wiring. It can either be linked to a keypadlinc, or since this is Home Assistant link it to some sort of automation and control it with whichever devices you have. Caveat: you will need a new hub or Insteon modem. There’s an official integration for the hub, and also a MQTT based modem integration. https://github.com/TD22057/insteon-mqtt

I like mine but I will admit that it’s acting funny after 3 years and the fan will no longer start on the low speed, it just groans. My understanding is that this is a symptom of a bad capacitor.

I ordered the Red Series Fan + Light Switch. With any luck I’ll get it working with ozw 1.4 because I’m not ready to move over to the new ozw integration yet. I’ll wait for them to get the bugs worked out and stream line the transition.

Want to report that following inoveli’s instructions worked flawlessly to get in working with ozw 1.4.
