How do you re-use or replace Node IDs for Z-Wave devices with Home Assistant?
I’ve had a hit or miss experience with the Everspring ST814 Temp/humidity sensors, where it will work for a period of time, but then fail to update for days on end. In troubleshooting, I removed and re-added the devices, so I’ve now shifted the node IDs several units up (e.g. now Node 39, but used to be Node 29). There is no longer a Node 29 and the system does not report it, but it seems like the next one will be 40 instead of filling in the lower number nodes that are not currently assigned. I’ve looked in the entity_registry.yaml and zwcfg…xml, but there doesn’t appear to be anything holding the unused number.
I believe the node ids are stored within the z-wave controller itself kind of like a primary key. The only way to reset the node count would be to restore your controller to factory settings.

@Tinkerer - Appreciate you cleaning up the thread.
I placed my last comment here because I believe that the extra Node IDs were generated as part of my troubleshooting for the situation described in Disappearing Z-Wave entities.
Since I wouldn’t wait long enough for them to register, I would un-pair them and re-pair them, therefore generating a new node.
