So I live in a house that was built in the 1960s thus all of the boxes are metal. I found a few switches that I wanted to swap out to zwave however the GE brand switch will not fit in the box… I also have 1 aeon labs micro switch g2 and that is too large to even be able to fit into the box. Am I pretty much screwed here? Was going to go to the store for a Lutron Caseta to see if that even fits… Think I am pretty much stuck to using smart bulbs at this point, which I REALLY do not want to do since there is no convenient way to turn them off at the wall switch and still have them functional. Is a Caseta switch smaller than this GE z-wave?
Are the switches to wide or to deep? If they are wide the side fins can be taken off. I’ve had to do that for of my switches.
I have one of those (it is actually quite large, even a blue plastic box would be a very tight fit) and they do not even fit into the box. I could turn them on their side but then it wouldnt fit either. I actually bought this to put into the box at the light in order to control lights that had no neutral in the box however then I will lose my switch functionality and I am better off with smart bulbs.
The back plastic (where all of the electronics are housed) is either too wide or too tall depending on the box.
That’s a pain…sorry.
If you’re a DIYer you can upgrade your boxes with the larger new ones, if the wall depth will allow.
I am certainly a DIYer however I will have to break out plaster around the box to get at it to remove it. They are all flush mounted to the face of the plaster as well. Really not worth it for some switches. Went to the store and grabbed a caseta to try out, already fits SO much better in the empty metal box I have.
what country do you live in?
The Aqara wall switches work quite well, but are the square (american? british?) form factor. You will also need a mi home hub. It is all relatively cheap, and i get mine from Gear Best.
Oh right I should have mentioned that, still new to the entire thing. I am in the USA. I will look them up.
It’s not zwave but you could wire the circuit on and use a Lutron Connected Bulb Remote with the mounting plate in the switch location paired to smart bulbs in the fixture. If you use Hue’s or Hue compatible bulbs ( Cree ) you would have HASS control via emulated hue.
Actually am going to be doing that in the kitchen where the switch is in a very stupid place. I am quite pleased that the Caseta fit the box being that there is no neutral but I would rather make my z-wave mesh a little bit stronger here. I have plenty of boxes that do have a neutral and a normal switch would be just fine there.
I really need to see how Caseta integrates into HASS. If it is seamless then I may just go that route and save myself the headache.
