Z-wave tachometer sensor for roof fan?

I would like to monitor the actual rpm speed of my EC ventilation/extractor roof fan in HA, to provide a way to monitor the speed and warn if the fan stops.

The fan is a ‘Vilpe Eco 160P Flow’, which provides a tachometer output signal, i.e. 1 pulse per rotation, from an open collector tachometer.

Are there any z-wave sensors that would report the rpm from the tachometer output into HomeAssistant?

I know that you stipulated Z-wave, but I have done something similar using ESP Home and a D1 Mini. The paring of the two works well for assembling all kinds of ad hoc sensors. Building your own Z-wave sensors is really hard and often involves more hackery than it’s worth.

Keep in mind that sometimes the biggest hurdle for anything like this getting power to the interface be it Z-wave, Zigbee or WiFi. The fan you specified appears to require 230 VAC, so maybe you can derive power from that for your interface.

Thanks, I’ll look into the ESPHome route. I was hoping though that there might be an off the shelf product by a module vendor, in the same way as the market has a variety of different Z-wave (or zigbee) temperature or motion sensors, dimmers and relays.

I would have thought there are lots of people with this challenge, as similar roof fans are commonplace in many countries (e.g. the Nordics). Is everyone having to solve their extractor fan monitoring through building DIY sensors?

Hi @Bohemian,

I’m interested in your fan sketch for tacho using a D1 and esphome.

I’m going to control an EC fan with one of those pwm to voltage modules, but would also like to get a reading from the fans onboard tacho at 1 pulse per rev.

Could you point me in the right direction or share?

Cheers,

Darren.

Hi @Bohemian ,

Sorry, I just found the Pulse Counter in ESPHome!

Darren.
