Z-wave virgin. Hit a brick wall, looking for pointers

Hi all,
Smartthings has been my Z-wave gateway but has become really unreliable for me.

So like any rational HA user with $50 in their pocket, I went and bought a Zooz 800 Series Z-Wave Long Range S2 Stick (ZST39 LR).
I plugged it into my Mac Mini and attached it to UTM, and pow, HA saw the stick and I was able to install Zwave JS, no issues.

Firmware is 1.20 (latest) and everything else (HA, Zwave JS) all up to date too.

So I thought I’d begin adding devices.
Like an idiot I initially tested with devices in use, they wouldn’t be found no matter what I tried.
I then tried with brand new devices, same thing.

Both via QR code (scanning the image via my phone and then via my computer) which looks like it works, but then nothing:

I then tried via discovery on my phone and also via a desktop browser, again, nothing:

logs dont show me much:

Can anyone point me to what I’m doing wrong please?
Appreciate any help, thanks!

Did you exclude them from the SmartThings hub first?

According to the manual you can enable or disable the “long range” function on the stick. Have you tried toggling that? It also states that not all devices will be compatible with long range.

Unfortunately I can’t. My first gen smartthings hub is so old, it fails on a lot of things. Exclusion mode being one of them which always times out. Oddly i can still add stuff to Smartthings.

I factory reset the devices I’m trying to add to HA though.

I cant see how to do this in HA, which is my only GUI to control the stick.

You can exclude devices from any Z-Wave controller, including from HA. Factory reset often excludes devices from their network, but not always.

HA doesn’t support Long Range, so this isn’t applicable. The controller will always function in normal mesh mode.

It’s in the same place your first picture is manage your ZWave network.

First welcome SmartThings Refugee.

Second slowdown and breathe.

You cannot add anything because they weren’t first excluded. If the device you’re trying to move is NOT ZWave plus then no just resetting it likely isn’t enough. Exclude on reset didn’t become a requirement until ZWave Plus.

So you will have to go and run the exclude (see remove device) from HA. It will issue a ‘general exclude’ that any ZWave device can respond to (its intended to allow you to disjoin a network when the original controller is unavailable)

So in your situation start excluding. Once they’re done then start including from the controller out.

Thanks @NathanCu this makes sense, but I have a few questions… (sorry!)

So using this contact sensor for example, it’s orphaned and no matter what i try now, it won’t go into exclusion mode. I’m in limbo as I also cannot re-pair this to smartthings and both ST and HA don’t see it for exclusion as it doesn’t go into exclusion mode.

It’s the same scenario for this nano switch. It too is orphaned and will not exclude no matter what I try now.

What would you recommend here?

This is from ST but its the same in HA.

Thanks for your patience with me!

No worries. Both of those are ZWave plus. Factory reset should also exclude. The ring device is smartstart (i glanced at the Aeotec but didn’t see it right off.) so I’d get the qr code off the device and set it up for smart start inclusion. That way when you factory reset it I just joins the way you want it. (it may be trying to now and failing)

:slightly_smiling_face:
Yeah so thats precisely what’s failing (smartstart) in addition to traditional detection.
I’m making sure to scan the QR from a HTTPS browser URL (nabucasa) on both phone and desktop, and I get the second image in my first post and no further.
The Ring contact sensor flashes green 3 times as its in inclusion mode but the HA Zwave setup never sees it.

Do you have that stick on an extension cable?

Here’s where you have options. Depending on the integration you can kick it into debug mode logging.

Just to confirm you are using builtin ZWaveJS or did you go The JsUI addin. Either is fine… (helps direct yuu to the right menu)

Some other basics. Have you successfully included anything to is point. If so what

No, direct into Mac Studio.

Hi Nathan,
I’m using ZwaveJS, UI looked more complex than I’m competent for.

So far I’ve not successfully included anything. :frowning:

You should have it on a 6’ extension cable and then located away from any RF interference (like your laptop, router, etc.). This is a common problem and the recommended setup for zwave.

Hi everyone, ok I’ve made some progress but still need help.

Let me document what I’ve done so it can help others who come across this.
I’m using a Z-Wave Plus Long Range Zooz USB Dongle 800 ZST39. I live in Europe.

I was convinced the dongle wasn’t working, was ready to return it then saw this Amazon review:

I reached out to Zooz who have been really responsive and have sent me the EU firmware, which for some reason I cant attach here.
Nonetheless, you need windows to flash it, which i dont have.

I had uninstalled Zwave JS from HA, but thought “before I return it, let me give it one last try”…
This time, i installed Zwave JS UI.
I followed these instructions but made one key change, in the settings for Zwave JS UI, scroll down to the Zwave menu and change the RF Region to Europe.

BAM! it started working! (Kinda)

Now, I’m able to add and exclude devices. yay!

Problem is, adding them does nothing.

Here’s what I mean:

I feel like I’m close to solving this and getting my gear working, so that I can finally dump smartthings, but need help figuring this last step.

Can anyone provide any direction please?

I’m about 90% certain that you can do this on a Mac with Simplicity Studio. You need to get that firmware flashed.

The wall mote won’t have any entities, it sends events / scenes when the buttons are tapped. Search and you can find how to use these as automation triggers.

The nano should have switches, but it doesn’t, it is also marked as dead. You may need to reposition the stick (on an extension cable) or add more mains powered nodes to improve your mesh. Likely both.

Refreshing the browser and doing a system restart may clear it up.

For your dead node, you can mark it as such in Z-Wave JS UI. Click Advanced / Failed nodes / Remove.
You can then try to re-include it, either with Smartstart (in which case you should wake the device, in case it’s a battery device) or with normal inclusion.
