Z-Wave what now?

I have installed a Hassio in a Virtualbox and connected my Aeon Z-Stick i a USB port.
I have set up Z-Wave with port, and the Z-Stick is a slave controller in Fibaro HC2.
The network is now visible in the web interface like this:

What now? What do I do next? I cant find any information on Z-Wave in Home Assistant other than the setup to the USB. How do I get it to do stuff and so on…

Any pointer on where to look?

What do you mean? This is such a loaded question. What are you trying to do?

I would like to do something… I have buttons, they do not work. Is this the frontend?
How do I make stuff work…

I have tried OpenHAB, and my Z-Wave devices show up in the Inbox, then I add them to Things, various functions becomes Items… Then I can control them. Then I have to design sitemaps and stuff to get a frontend like BasicUI.

I have a Fibaro HC2 and as soon as I add a Z-Wave device I get a default icon with actions.

Since I have tried OpenHAB, I know the Z-Stick in slave controller mode work fine, at least for switches and dimmers. But in Home Assistant, the switches and dimmers do nothing. Nothing happends if I switch on a switch or dimmer. The dimmer I can slide up and down, but when nothing happens…

So whats next, do I do anything with the Z-Wave devices? Do I edit a GUI, or is this it?

At this point, all those controls should work if they were detected. You’d just configure things to have the names you want.

So you are saying that none of the switches work?

I think you might be better off using the Fibaro Hub component:

https://www.home-assistant.io/components/fibaro/

Correct, they do not work.

Lets say I turn on dimmer with Z-Wave ID 2, it should turn on my bedrom light. Nothing happens.
I made a map of all the ID’s when configuring OpenHAB to make things easier for me.

I tried turning every single switch and dimmer, to see if anything works. None do.

I’m actually going to agree with @sota, because you have your zstick as a slave, I don’t think it will communciate with HA. You’d be better off communicating with the fibaro but instead.

The thing is, my Fibaro HC2 is dying… It’s unstable and works only with it’s sideplates removed, and new cooling paste, extra heatsinks on the USB sticks, and a 12V fan blowing though it.

So the Z-Stick might become the master if I end up finding a solution that works for me.

Then you should remove the hub from the equation. I use a z-stick and had no issues with it auto sensing and working immediately. All you should have done is:

  1. Install HA
  2. Configure zwave component
  3. UI elements work
  4. Use UI elements and go through renaming and hiding unwanted things.

Your step 3 isn’t working and it’s likely due to the fact that your z-stick is a slave.

The slave can control the devices in OpenHAB. I have that working already. I’testing options.

The Z-Stick can be a slave of HC2, and HC2 can make it a master but I belive I can not do the other way around. So if I remove the HC2, then I do not have a house that works…

Heating and ventilation depend on the Z-Wave network. So I will not have a happy wife

Well then you need to find the root cause of your issues. You have a unique scenario that most don’t run into. Check your zwave logs and check the HA logs. OpenHAB uses the same library, so if it’s possible there it should be possible here.

But this is the interface? There is nothing more? There is no more configuration on the different Z-Wave modules?

I have not done anything with them yet, other than setting up the z-stick and let it sit after not figuring out how to view the list of Z-wave devices. And after a while they where pouring in.

All the sensors are on the top, blocking the view, and making no sense. I need to rename them. Can I group them? Make rooms? “Build my house”…

Is there a guide? I find basically nothing on Z-Wave and Home Assistant.

Here’s the thing.

You add z-wave to your home assistant.

Anything connected to z-wave is added (sensors/switches/dimmers/etc)

You now control said sensors/switches/dimmers/etc. There is nothing to configure on z-wave for that.

Right, so, now the network is up and running, all devices are there, at leas all the ones the Z-Stick is able to see, and the Z-Wave binding/plugin/whatever is trying to identify all the devices and what they can do.

So it might jus be time it needs before the switches and dimmers work…
And the next thing is to check logs.

What about the GUI?

I’m gussing that with a huge Z-Wave network like mine with lots of sensors, serial communication can be blocking the messages.

What about it?

You have complete control over the GUI.

YES, that was it! I checked my house and all dimmers are on :scream:

But the GUI i want to change it. I want to group my devices to rooms/floors.

Learn it. Love it. You can modify right from the GUI
