Z Wave / Zigbee Controller for Ceiling Fans (no dedicated wiring)

Hi,

I’m doing some research on how to control ceiling fans in rooms where there’s no dedicated wiring / switch for the fan. So if a fan is controlled by a remote, what are my options to control it via z-wave or zigbee? I know of the bond bridge but I don’t do wifi based controllers in my smart home.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Depends on the kind of remote. If it is IR then this would work: Moes IR Remote.
There are other options for Bluetooth, etc… It all depends on what the remotes are.

Thanks for the recommendation @GlennHA .

I actually haven’t purchased any fans yet. I’m in a final stage of remodeling and threw away all the 20 year old fans that were installed. Everything new I buy goes through the same “how can I control it in HA” process  so technically I will go with fans that gives me the best HA control.

I’m assuming fans are controlled by either IR, RF? Is there an RF remote similar to the Moes one?
BTW - does it have to be a controller that takes over the transmission or are there any relays / modules that can be wired inline as well?

There was a zwave inovelli fan/light switch but it was discontinued.

The zigbee fan/light by hampton bay was discontinued as well.

There is an inovelli zigbee fan only control

There is a jasco zwave fan only too

However, both are fan only and in the wall, so you need seperate power for the lights.

As far as I know, there is no in canopy zwave or zigbee option anymore.

I know you said you’re against wifi, but I have a sonoff ifan04 that is flashed with tasmota. It works very well and has a remote, and controls the fan and light. It is in canopy so can work with just 2 wires to the fan.

Thanks! can you specify what does the tasmota firmware gives that the controller doesn’t do by default?

It takes it out of the cloud allowing it full local control with Home Assistant.

It’s a little involved, but here’s the blog post on how to flash it

The sonoff ifan04 can work with esphome as well, which would also allow full local control.

Check your assumptions first. It’s a wild west at the moment with so many little things to consider.

Ceiling fans in the US these days has a higher % using DC motors, as opposed to AC motor fans in the past. Which means the new DC ones come with its own control remotes, and there is no standard, and thus no good way to integrate those.
Some of the fans offer smart home capability via apps. However those would not be local.

This also means none of those Innovelli or Enbrighten or sonoff fan controllers would work for DC motor fans. As such, you might want to stay with AC motor fans only, which is shrinking in market shares as of late.

Also, if you are limiting to zigbee or zwave controller only, it would be (very) hard to find any bridge that controls ceiling fans via IR or RF or bluetooth.

I will be in the market also, with no good answer. So if you find anything that works for you, please share your solution in the end - whatever that might be.
