ZHA crashes HA when shut down

I’ve had an issue for a while where my HA would crash when I tried to restart it. Regardless of whether I tried from the UI or the CLI. The only way to restart my HA was to forcibly shut down the virtual machine that run it, and had HA crashed it had to go through the task manager.

I tried to isolate the issue and see what might be causing it. I couldn’t find anything in the log, so I had to brute force it. I found out that I could update/restart the core once CLI was active, but integrations and add-ons hadn’t loaded.

Last night I tried to deactivate my ZHA service and was met with the same crash. I also tried going through the ZHA settings and prompted another crash. I fear that I will lose a lot of automation and data if I try to delete ZHA or if I migrate to Zigbee2MQTT.

Has anyone encountered this issue before and know of a fix?

What hypervisor are you running ?

I’m running VirtualBox with the virtual machine provided by HA and set up according to their instructions.

Chipset is set to ICH9 ?

I’ve now tried to adjust the chipset, still the same crash. I gave it about 10 minutes to respond and dead as a dead person, with a particular reason to be dead.

Then maybe time to switch to vmware ? Or if you don’t need windows, to proxmox ?

I’ve just finished setting everything up on VMWare, which seems to have fixed the issue. It was somewhat easy to restore my latest backup from the other instance.

Thank you for your help.

For others in my position, I found the VMWare installer here: https://www.reddit.com/r/vmware/comments/1cnad9i/i_need_to_download_vmware_workstation_player/

And followed this guide: Install Home Assistant On Windows Using VMware | Simply Smart House
