In theory, the coordinator should support 200 devices.
I can’t find the link any more, but I read on koenkk’s GitHub the recommendation to split the network in 2 when over 150 devices.
I ended up splitting the network in 4, and running Hubitat HE hubs due to the fact that the integration for HA is so nice and clean. I have a stable zigbee network now for months with 190 devices.
It does matter because hardware and firmware of most modern Zigbee Coordionator adapters are limited to around a maximum of around 200 “Zigbee 3.0” devices but can practically handle an unlimited amout of Zigbee 1.x devices, reason for that is that Zigbee 3.0 require a lot of overhead. See FW specs:
