Zigbee wire switch

Hello there,

Does that exist?
As usual, guests in my house tend to activate a physical switch, ruining my smart bulbs configuration.
Especially those bedside lamps.
It is a switch that cut the wire somewhere, like so

Is it possible to replace that switch with something looking similar (momentary switch, push button, … is fine) but zigbee?

So my guests will have the reassuring feeling of a well known switch but I’ll not have to pair my bulbs all the time.

Is there anything suitable here?

Otherwise you might try a remote switch - it might feel familiar even though it’s not wired in.

You could consider something like the following:

Alternatively just lose the inline rocker switch and go for an Ikea smart bulb with a remote:

There are several Blueprints for the Ikea remotes that let you also control additional devices or activate scenes via double-tapping for example.

I like the first one, will investigate that idea further.

The second solution is what I’ve for the chandelier but unless you remove the wall switch and cover the hole with the ikea (or other wireless) remote, it is the same, guests are pushing that god damn button.

For wall light switches I use the following from Ali Express which are available for with/without a neutral wire:

The module goes behind the wall switch plate and the switch is wired into the module meaning that the ceiling light can be operated either by the wall switch, a remote, or from an HA Dashboard.

In the bedrooms I have a wall switch plate with 3 switches so that the bedside lamps can be controlled from the wall switch as well. I am happy to share the config if you are interested.

Thank you for the wall switch idea.

I’ve already a project with a sonoff mini l2 ongoing, decoupling the relay and the button so the light is always powered on and can act as a zigbee mesh relay.

The button just being relayed to the lamp through the “bind” option of Zigbee2MQTT.

When this project is mature enough, I’ll share it in the forum under “my project” section.

Talking about ikea, I got in touch with their lab, complaining that for a company promoting eco responsibility, only selling battery powered sensor is not good.

The world could benefits from some power line connected sensors, like presence sensor to replace a wall switch. Or their remote that could also be a wired device to install instead of an existing wall switch.

They agreed but it is not in their philosophy to sell “raw” devices, that require some electrical knowledge. Sad.

It is a good start on my journey to a wired in switch but I’d prefer something smaller. It is really beefy!
I’m glad you mentioned it so I know that such things exist, I’ve to get to the bottom of it now.

I don´t know if it is still relevant, but since the SAMOTECH Cord Dimmer is currently unavailable, I found “Zigbee dimmer for wire” from Light Solutions. I just ordered it and try to get it to run on my Home Assistant.

It is still relevant as I did not find yet what I was looking for.
But this one is like the SAMOTECH one, it is too big for my need as I don’t need the dimming option.

I’m waiting for sonoff (or shelly or any other) to sell a tiny enough relay to include in a printable switch.
I’m looking for something more like 2"x1" (2cm x 5cm)

Both of these will do what you’re asking for, but they’re about twice the size you wanted.

Posting anyway in case the form factor is still acceptable:

Thank you, I’m having a look at all the proposals, one day I’ll find the holy grail
I was even looking at dismantling my sonoff micro but it is wifi, not zigbee. And 5V, not 220V

I did a small writeup on that first dimmer switch, in case it helps someone else down the line:

Notes for anyone else who is thinking about importing the HZC D076-ZG Zigbee Lamp Cord Dimmer Switch : r/homeassistant (reddit.com)

I’d love to see someone develop and offer Zigbee cord switches. Until then, we could design our own casing to accommodate the ZBMINIR2, which appears to be the smallest Zigbee switch module currently available (39.5 x 33 x 16.8 mm).

Here’s a great example of how someone managed to integrate the larger Shelly switches:

I’m looking for the solution to a similar problem. I have a floor light with an inline switch, the type that you stand on to turn on and off:

I fitted an Aqara Zigbee bulb to it and would like to make the switch smart so that other family members can turn it on/off via the switch without HA losing access to the bulb.

The switch body doesn’t look big enough to fit something like a Sonoff ZBMINIR2 inside so I’m a bit stumped.

The smallest I’ve found is the Shelly 1 Mini Gen3 but it is WiFi, not Zigbee, still searching

Shelly gen4 are ZigBee. Not sure if they have a mini version since they were launched just a couple of months ago, but if I remember correctly, it exists.

There is a mini version of the Gen 4: https://www.shelly.com/products/shelly-1-mini-gen4.

Can these operate in decoupled mode so that the switch in the puck will still work but power to the bulb will be maintained?

If not, I’m thinking I should just get a wireless switch, like the Aqara Mini Switch T1, and just put that on the side table that is next to the light.

Up to and including Gen3, it was. Would be surprising if Gen4 can’t

It should, but there’s some kind of issue currently. Seems the inputs are not exposed in ZigBee mode, which will probably make decoupled mode useless.

This is all off the top of my head. Search the threads here for the Shelly gen4 topics - there’s more info about it there
