Zwave configuration for sleeping devices does not update

basic details here; Zwave - set configuration parameter - how does it work?

but I figured a new thread was in order since I now know how to configure it, now the configuration updating does not work.

so I make a config change on a zwave ‘sleeping’ device and the the log says:

but the config actually never changes. I have set the config a few times and thought it might just need to wake up or something but it always remains 12.

That is why the instructions say to manually wake up the device first. It is also why all battery powered zwave devices have a means of waking them up manually.
