Zwave device association with zwavejs2mqtt

Hi all, I’ve been struggling to try and make a direct association between two devices for quite some time now. I’ve searched to the ends of this forum and the rest of the internet and can’t seem to make it work at all.

I have a zooz remote switch (zen34) that I’m trying to direct associate with a Aeotec Smart Dimmer 6 (zw099). I’m creating the association in the groups section under the remote switch with endpoint 0, group 2 and the target node is set to the dimmer with the endpoint 0.

Ultimately a link is not created despite it showing up in the groups table. That being said, I can see the device transmitting information when I look at the debug window and I’m able to control the dimmer via it’s entity on HA so I know that it’s receiving information.

Does anyone know what I might be doing wrong?

Thanks in advance!

Are both devices joined at the same security level?

No, the switches are S2 and the dimmers are S0 Legacy. Is that the problem?

Yep, sure is… They need to be joined at the same level.

Do you need s0 or s2 security for switches? I generally reserve that level of security for locks.

Even without s0 or s2 security the zwave network is still fairly secure.

If you absolutely need security, you should be able to force the switches to s0 security to match the dimmers s0 security. Be warned though you could face performance issues. Zwave is extremely low bandwidth, and s0 security uses that bandwidth pretty quick, and can create noticeable slow downs.
