Zwave setup in India

Hi everyone,

I’ve been following the project for a few months. The only hands-on thing I did was to run pi-hole on a fresh install.

I am now looking to begin with some automation, mostly lights to start with. I have done some reading online and searched through the forums. Details of my query below

  1. I purchased dimmable lights from corvi https://www.corvi.com/
  2. I am now looking to have basic on/off + dimmers for these lights (physical, no automation, no hassio - basically dumb home)
  3. Ability to eventually turn it into a smarthome (replacing normal light switches with z-wave switches)

I spoke with the zwave India folks at hyderabad who have put me in touch with the sales rep for my region who took my requirements and will get back to me.

My questions are:

  1. Is corvi a good choice of LED lights? (goal is to have on/off , dimming)
  2. Which compatible Z-Wave stick should I purchase? Any links?
  3. Which Z-Wave compatible switches/dimmers do you recommend?
  4. What should I be careful of in terms of wiring? (it’s a new apartment which I’m yet to move in to so I can work with the electrician to get things done right)

Also - does anybody else have experience with doing a HA setup in India? Any pointers, things I should be careful about? Is Z-Wave a good choice?

Thanks

I personally think z-wave is a good choice although more expensive than other options. Z-wave device availability varies because the frequency used is different, depending on your region.

Apparently India is the only one listed using 862.5 MHz so you need devices specifically designed for India. That may limit your choices. You should see a pretty good listing of available devices here.

For example, I have an Aeotec lightbulb that I like but it is not available for India.

Thanks for your response.

I went through that list, I was thinking of using the Aeotec Z-Stick Series 5 as the controller but looks like that isn’t available here

There doesn’t seem to be an alternative to this (a USB stick that can be plugged in to HA) :frowning:
looking at https://products.z-wavealliance.org/regions/5/categories/25/products

Not everything is listed there. I have a PIR sensor for the US and that particular model is not listed there but it is designed for the US and works.

Yep, I found this though https://www.z-wave.in/shop/smart-gateways/z-stick-lite/

It’s by Aeon Labs but not listed under devices that have been confirmed to work on https://www.home-assistant.io/docs/z-wave/controllers/

Has anybody used this? Is it compatible with HA? The link only talks about windows.

i do not know if this one would work. They give few details.

Yep, very sparse on details.

I found a manual https://www.z-wave.in/downloads/4023 which says “Software drivers for the Silabs CP2102 may need to be installed for the Z-Stick to be recognized on some computers” which leads me to https://www.silabs.com/products/interface/usb-bridges/classic-usb-bridges/device.cp2102

I will see if the regional z-wave sales rep can give me more info.

What server hardware are you looking at using? I think I found a Raspberry Pi specific solution.

Yes, I’m planning to use Raspberry Pi 3 Model B.

I have a 3B+. Here is the Pi module they show.

So I wrote to Aeon Labs support.

As per them Z-Stick Lite is one of their oldest products on the market and the device should have been discontinued for Z-Stick Gen5 ZW090.

He has pointed me to https://shop.zwave.eu/products/z-wave-controller/pc-adaptors-usb-dongles/1746/z-wave.me-uzb-smart-home-stick-indian-frequency which I don’t think is available here but looks like something that will work

I think I will go with this for now and retrofit Z-wave switches later for lighting control

@gsin
Were you successful in dimming the corvi led’s?
What is the hardware you used?
.
Regarding choice of Z wave, it is too expensive.
