2025.1: Backing Up into 2025!

I have done GDPR projects for several large multinational corporations. The biggest issue we faced with backups was the right to be forgotten. Having to rummage through decades of backups and find all references to a person and remove them is an insurmountable job. It is still an unresolved issue. This may or may not become an issue for NC if a person used the backups for a while and later submits a SAR.

No, not yet. I was hoping the encryption would be optional in the official method for local/SMB by the time I really needed to clean it up haha.

Have a lot of space left locally and on the NAS for now.

Does the Google Drive Add-on do anything if you donā€™t link Google to it? I donā€™t use Google Drive so havenā€™t felt the need to test it.

The OneDrive add-on also supports the auto cleanup and unencrypted backups. But it doesnā€™t have anything for local+SMB. It uses the ā€˜defaultā€™ storage location locally which is either a local folder or the SMB share you link as Backup to HA OS.

And I want the backup local + SMB + Cloud.

I donā€™t think this will be an issue for NC. The Data Subject can delete their own data (backup). A SAR is not needed - unless NC canā€™t provide this ability for a significant period (possibly leading to a data breach too).

Iā€™m not terribly happy with encrypted backups either, but I guess I can live with it. A bigger concern for me is who can I create a full system backup. I just recently had my system die, and it corrupted the SD card. I had to restore from a full backup to get my system back running again. This is the functionality that I need. How do I do this now?

Yes you can disable cloud upload within the addon. It will just use the configured Home Assistant Backup Location then (The backup storage configured in HA), but you can only specify one location, so it will only manage backups on that one location.

Yes it does not need Google to work. It can do local or nas and cloud. The only problem with this add-on is that itā€™s not maintained any more (I think). But it works great and I will be using it until itā€™s not.

Yes, you can provide a folder path in ā€˜remote sharingā€™ field.

Full Backup is still available. Even the official method does a Full backup by default, just encrypted only.

See my earlier post for unencrypted backups without add-ons or custom integrations.

Ok, so that part works the same as the OneDrive Add-on that is still maintained currently.

OneDrive support for the official method is being worked on already.

Backup encryption is fine, but removing the ability to do a backup before addon or core upgrades is crazy. I have had to roll back after addon upgrades many times and now this is not going to be possibleā€¦

I understand the need for encryption, auto backup, etc but removing a feature to allow easy rollback of a single addon blows my mindā€¦

Thanks, I had no idea the Google Drive Backup could be used for local and SMB shares by itself. Just tested that here as well and works perfect!

I did not change any backup settings but noticed that automatic backup is deactivated since 2 days?! Very very strange, I cannot explain. Did anyone have seen something similar? I will switch now back to samba backup till everything is more stable and maybe one day not encrypted, donā€™t want to loose any data.

Another comment, the name of the automatic backup should contain the date and time, otherwise you are not able to see in the overview when the backup was done

Not true. A PR was merged in May 2024.

ok spend whole day to try to restore from backup, (have live system available) keep running into errors, does not matter which backup i take, or do partial or not. why o why are the log outputs not shown during the restore process, this would have saved me a shitload of timeā€¦ oh whell, it is a hobby and i will rebuild my system better than it was.

show me errors,
without any no one can help out

I saw the MR, also the one from google drive,
Do you know it those support retention, the NC backup doesnā€™t but that makes sens as space is limited, but for google and one drive I would like to set retention per location.

The google drive backup add-on has retention options for both the local and the cloud backups.

Letā€™s hope so, because this add-on is more important than ever now. All I can see is that the latest version was 0.112.1, which was uploaded on 12/2023, hasnā€™t been updated during the whole 2024.

you mean the add on,
I actually was asking for this one?
