2025.1: Backing Up into 2025!

Maybe it is just “mature”?

Oh, ok, you are asking about the native one. I don’t know, I’ve never used it. I’ve always thought that the add-on provided me with many more options. Especially now.

For folks wanting a very full set of backup options I really suggest looking at Auto Backup (Auto Backup) if you haven’t. In particular it does a nice job with generational backup maintenance which for me at least is the best way to manage backups. No connection with the author - just a pleased user. (Tried Google backup and OneDrive in the past but this works well with any cloud mirror and very well with my NAS.)

I native one is not completed yet.
I also always relayed on the add on, But I hope to be able to migrate to native.

That doesn’t even seem to be merged yet.

return on command: jobs info
during restore… and after this it stops.

Please please don’t post pictures of text. Copy and paste, helping users since 1974.

For a start we have no information about what you typed to get this response, or what the complete output was.

Would love to, but no cli access, hence this.

do you start the restote using cli?
for restoring I always advise,
set up HA the normal way,
install SSH add on and make sure it’s working,
the go to backups for restore,
via ssh, you can use the “top” command to check if something is happening, usually it is, but there is no progress bar and it can take hours.

restore was tried via webgui, wihtout setting up instance (restore from backup)
thanks for the advise will try your approach tommorow

Seems very promising and well maintained, even though it’s relatively new. Is it reliable? Does it handle individual add-ons, “ignoring” of some backups etc. like the google drive backup add-on? Why did you switch in the first place? I’m also a satisfied user of the google drive add-on.

Seems reliable. I’ve had no issues. I really like generational backups because they are a space efficient way to automatically have both frequent recent backup and long term historical backups. I haven’t played with the exclusion stuff. It won’t delete backups it doesn’t know about. I just wanted to give it a shout out amid all the discussions of alternative schemes.

I’m going to try that one too. Thanks for mentioning it. The forced encryption on local backups is bad enough, but not having the ability to automatically backup before any core or add-on upgrade is just plain crazy. That 100% needs to be reverted.

As per it looks it is a "backup are a work in progress. My feedback is:

  • It is cool that there is planned scheduled backup of the system.
  • It would be more cool if I save a copy to choose if must be encrypted or not.
  • to be honest once set the schedule of the backups… (and I’m still testing it)… it looks a little… forced to do as “programmed” not user oriented. I mean old way… backup when you want is better (once upon a time or monthly or yearly) for Home Assistant… it is more individual and we do not need (unless wanted) to encrypt the data… unless those… are going in the cloud… without knowing it… The other backup (the old one)… well managed locally… was more flexble… and how often / why / and what we do with the backup data… I guess is individual as per our houses are not corporate or industrial property.

Agreed, but you can still backup the addon. A little more manual, but doable.

I lke the fact that the backups can be automated easily, though I am having issues with automatic backup to an SMB1-connected NAS drive. For some reason the file dates are all 2057!
Seems odd because manual backups to the same location work fine.
Anyone else seeing this?

Hi, I am a user of HA and a supporter of Nabu Casa.
I run my HA on a NUC i3 with 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD.
I run HA to help with automation of tasks around our house as we are an elderly couple and rely on HA to Turn on lights, Air Conditioners, etc as well as monitor our solar system using the HA energy dashboard.
I have been running HA for a number of years (4-5 I forget) but have noticed some great steps forward but also some steps that seem to be a bit non user friendly.

I always read the Release notes and try and see if they will tell me if the latest release will cause me grief.

How often do I backup?
I have an automation that does a full backup at 01:00am each night backs up to my Local SSD on the system. At 15:00 on Wednesday I do a full Backup to my synology NAS as a 3rd source.

I always do a full backup before any major changes to the OS as I have been caught there too.
As a precaution I use windows Shell script on my laptop and SAMBA to copy the backups to an SSD that is attached to my laptop. This would be used to do a restore or rebuild if necessary.
I usually manually purge older backups from the HA backup utility.

How often do I open the backups or restore?

Well I only just found out that I could open the backup and copy parts so have never done that.
In the past year I have had to restore about twice (I think) and this has usually been because of and update that has screwed me. HACS is sometimes the issue but not always.

I also run Grafana so my backup size is currently about 4.5GB for a full backup. One of the things I monitor in our house is temperatures in my Freezer and refrigerator (Fridge / Freezer). This uses the RFLINK integration and RF433 sensors in the refrigeration devices. Just recently the data I had stored in Grafana was so useful in alerting me to the main fridge / freezer failing and failing under extended warranty, that it saved me $1000 off the cost of a replacement appliance. The service guy was most impressed with my data.

So if I have to do a restore due to an update issue I do lose some data and how much depends on how long it takes to fix things.

The other thing is that HA Energy dashboard is a statistical beast so losing data here is a bummer and sort of defeats the purpose of history if you have to go back in time.

So as you can gather from my long winded post that backups are a critical part of any data system. I used to be an Oracle data base Administrator and Lan Admin and if I got my backups wrong my users would crucify me.

The comment about the Beta testers and so forth being off on holiday is valid but in my opinion then the release should not be done over holiday periods if there is insufficient testers and /or testing.
I also am not a fan of Encrypted backups as this only impedes me if I have to do an emergency restore due to an update failure. My vote is for optional. All my backups are local and if I want an offsite I can easily manually copy a backup to Google Drive where I have 100GB or 1TB on OneDrive instead of the small 5GB on Nabu Casa.

True… One thing I have learned from working in IT my entire life. You never have enough backups. That isn’t a problem that needs to be solved.

Security is often defined as the preservation of Confidentiality, Integrity and Availability. For my Home Assistant configuration Availability is the highest priority since I have no important secrets. So I would definitely prefer unencrypted backups to avoid problems sometime in the future when I urgently have to restore a backup and can’t find the encryption key. Encryption on/off should be a user configuration option to ensure the system complies with the users security policy for encryption. Everybody will have different needs.
