Add zone based on current location from a person?

Hey all,

Not sure if this is a topic already discussed, it feels more like a “WTH” topic actually. I don’t think there is an easy way to create a new zone based on a current position from a certain person? Seems like a good addition in the “map” view of Home Assistant? Click a person > Add as new zone > give a name / icon, and done is the new zone.

Greetings

I keep thinking this capability previously existed - but I can’t find it now. My home is in Calgary Canada and I’m currently in Costa Rica. I’d like to make places where I spend time in Costa Rica into zones - but it is so painful because even though I position the map to my current location, “add zones” immediately goes back to my home zone and I need to navigate back to my current location on the tiny map in my phone.

Maybe this still exists and I just can’t find it?

There is a zone creation service included in the Spook custom integration.

Edit: Misunderstood OP’s request.

This already exists in HA, just click on a person for example on a dashboards person card and there is an option to a persons current location as a new zone

I don’t see anything like that… and no such functionality is mentioned in the docs.

Go to settings and then to entities, search for entities that start with “person.NAME” and klick on that. That is the view I’m talking about.

Note: the person need to be in a new area that you don’t have added a zone for yet, otherwise you don’t see the option to add it

That “being in an existing zone” is probably the problem. In my case I have a zone called Costa Rica and want to create multiple zones within it (based upon a person’s location). I guess to get around this limitation I need to delete the larger zones and then re-add them later.

Are there issues associated with deleting and recreating the same zone?

@kenwiens If you install Spook, you could write a script to make use of the zone.create service as a potential workaround.

Well, that took me off on a tangent :grinning: - I’d never heard of spook and now I’ve spent a day reading all about it!
