Economy seems to be slightly less aggressive in cycling as it doesn’t hand over as quickly to the daikin return air sensor, but eventually starts doing similar.

I’ve resorted to a HA automation that triggers the system off, then on again once relevant zones overnight hit <0.5 degrees below setpoint. Lets see how it goes I can report back.

With the min vent settings, does that mean certain zones always stay open, like a permanent spill? I guess I could try that for the retreat zone next to the return air duct? That may maintain the temp there. But lets see if HA solves it I suspect should be ok.

Can you tell us again what’s happening @B-moose? You posted graphs previously but sometimes it’s easier to understand a written description.

Economy shouldn’t hand over control to the return sensor, at least based on what I know. I think it only looks at room temperatures.

Rather than turn the whole system off, I would probably just change the setpoint down a degree below your true setpoint, then when the temp hits your setpoint increase it to your setpoint. I’m not sure if turning the system off and on is any better or worse than changing the setpoint, but I would generally avoid turning off the unit… it just seems a bit much.

I also have these automations that only let bedroom dampers open to about 50%, to reduce the speed of heating. I found even with a 10kw unit on minimum it was flooding bedrooms with too much heat even on low fan. That works quite well with a spill zone, I guess it should work with a bypass damper.

With a huge heat pump and high minimum output I’d expect regular and quite fast cycling.

My system wasn’t working great with spill zone, so I had a bypass duct installed. Now, once zones have reached temp or off (either auto or economy it ends up same), the control sensor becomes Daikin (return air). So what happens especially overnight when cold, is hysteresis with the Daikin sensor. It drops temp below the set point, then spools up, its temp rapidly rises via bypass duct and turns off again, over and over.

These issues are all probably due to an oversized Daikin unit with poor operating range. But I’m stuck with it for now so have to make do.

I think over the last few nights I’ve got it under control with the HA automation, which switches it off then only turns the system back on once zones are <0.5deg under setpoint.

Yeah there isn’t much you can do, you can set the min vent to an amount so the zones stay cracked open a bit and the bypass then won’t open as much, it’s all a trade off for it running on.

Have mentioned before but if you had my device fitted to it you can make it stop for a period of up 20mins now which would reduce the stop starting.

It’s really hard to work around a system that has been oversized or can’t ramp down as it should:

If your bypass is open that much for that long it kind of indicates they system has no load, rooms at temp so automating the whole system off would be better

Thanks, yes I think this is the case. Our insulation is decent, once at temp it lasts a while.

The HA automation seems to be working, but I’ll keep an eye on it and consider that device option if not. One thing I’m still not sure of is whether better to use auto or economy control mode in combination with the automation? They seem to not be much different though when used with a bypass.

You have a bypass so you should be using auto as the Airtouch needs to hand back control to the AC system when all zones are at temperature, that is then used to cycle the system on and off.

Economy will as you have noticed but It’s not ideal long term. My system at home will do what yours does but not as bad as it runs down to 3kw (1000 watts) and doesn’t stop start as frequently but gives best temperature control.

I would be increasing your setting out to 1 degree also instead of .5 which will give it that bit more off time and your probably won’t notice it while your asleep.

It’s odd that it’s starting 4 times an hour and taking the temperature from 17 degrees to around 25 degrees. Is that bottom graph you posted of a bedroom or some other temperature, like the return vent temp? Generally my Airtouch keeps things within a 1 degree temperature range. Economy is meant to only look at wall sensor temperatures as far as I know, at least on the Airtouch4 I have.

If that’s a bedroom temp it almost seems like the room is flooded with hot air, the sensor is super sensitive maybe directly under the vent. If it’s the return vent temp that’s odd. I reckon you need someone who really understands these systems to have a look in person.

What kind of path is there from the supply duct in each bedroom to the return vent? An undercut door? A door / wall vent? What size is it?

Where is your bedroom temperature sensor located compared with your supply duct and the vent / door?

It’s getting to 25 because the bypass is open and it’s circulating hot air on itself and bleeding it off to rooms if they require it. The Daikin system is trying to maintain the loop temperature but the system won’t slow down enough because of its size which is why he has that problem,

Hi all, I have been following this thread a couple months and was hoping for some insight on an issue we’re having overnight with Airtouch 5, not the integration or HA specifically.

We had an 18kW Panasonic ducted system installed with Airtouch 5 a few months ago just in time for Melbourne’s winter, and have been using TheNoctambulist’s HA integration which is great. Overall pretty happy with the Panasonic and AT5 combination. We have two spill zones setup which mostly only activate overnight.

I’ve noticed that when we have only the nursery zone active (all other zones switched off), the reference/supply temperature switches to one of the spill zones, and lets the nursery drift quite a bit below the set point.

I got Claude to make a chart directly from the HA integration data which hopefully illustrates this. It shows the nursery and spill zone temps along with the reference temp over a five hour overnight window. You can see the reference temp tracks the spill zones for the most part and as a result the nursery drifts 1.5C below setpoint, where I would normally expect the unit to fire up after hitting 1C below (my installer also set a deadband of +/- 1C for heating, if that has any impact).

In this example, the unit only started running after we kicked up the set point to 20 in the middle of the night, and turned itself back off once one of those zones got to 1C above setpoint.

Is this the expected behaviour of Airtouch 5 in economy mode or is it possible some setting is misconfigured here? I would have expected the unit to ignore the spill zone temps and only focus on the active zone.

I have sent you a message but I see a bit here that isn’t setup properly that is probably causing the issues.
Deadband will have an impact also, should have been left alone, it was only ever put in place as an interim feature for some other brands long ago. Have never needed to change it.
