could you mount it upside down then feed the cord through it?
Chris, I did briefly wonder about it upside down, but (a) it would not use the existing mounting screw on the window frame, (b) the unit itself would be in the way and catch on the beaded cord, (c) the beaded cord will not be travelling as far around the sprocket, so more chance of skipping, and (d) the control buttons would be upside down.
Thinking about it again, the real issue is keeping enough tension on the sprocket as it turns, and the above may not be insurmountable.
(a) I was intending to use a few 3M Command adhesive strips to attach it to the window frame (because I am renting).
(d) the main driver is that end of the window is difficult to get at, and so I was wanting to use HA with automations and voice assistant anyway (so avoiding using the manual control buttons and the zemismart app). I have since remembered that the buttons can be swapped depending on whether the cord is on the right or left of the window.
(b) and (c) will be the most likely limiting factor … The sprocket cover has several tabs which I could break off to give gaps at the correct locations - but for the better long-term I could 3D print a new sprocket cover which will guide the beaded cord to the sides.
This will be less invasive than opening the case and hard-wiring the power to the power socket, … but first I might try buying a “Right Angle DC Plug” from Jaycar and soldering up a short external power extension lead. Hopefully my soldering is up to that 
why not just shorten the cord? no one will know when you move out if it’s slightly shorter
Maybe just make a small loop in the cord halfway up so it won’t tangle.

Darren I guess you are thinking of a different type of blind mechanism.
Dave, I may be mistaken, but i don’t think it is quite that simple.
I have not found a join in the beaded cord where i can simply remove a few links. I can certainly cut and shorten the cord, but since the cord is (slightly) shorter than the blind I will have to research how to join it back up so that the join will flow through one of the sprockets without jamming.
And when I move out I will have to fill and paint over the existing loop mounting hole. I know, not a big deal for a tradie, but I am a retired programmer who never got into DIY.
Anyway, I have instead changed the power plug to a right-angle plug. It only just fits and doesn’t allow easy access to the setting button or the tab which hods the wall mounting. Hopefully it will be good enough for here and now. Thank you for your assistance.

I don’t think they would fit through the driver. Maybe it could be positioned to not have to though.
I doubt the metal joint will fit through either of the drive sprockets (top attached to the blind or bottom at the drive motor).
Starting with the joint touching the blind drive motor, then opening the blind, the blind will go up to about 10cm short of fully raised before hitting the top sprocket. I could live with this.
Instead i have replaced the blind motor’s power plug (I forgot to mention I bought the mains-powered model, so the power plug will be permanently connected) with a right-angle plug. It comes right down to touch the bottom window sill … but it does the job while leaving the blind unmodified.

Well, I spoke to soon!
All 6 of my Telstra/Sercomm SZ-ESW01-AU plugs have started turning off at random intervals but all within 30 seconds of each other.
They can go several days without a problem then turn off repeatedly for several hours.
Some have devices plugged in and others do not.
I’m currently saving the debug logs for zigbee2mqtt and mqtt to see if I can find if the command is coming from HA, zigbee2mqtt or the plugs themselves.
It might be time to build a ZigBee network sniffer as I have a couple of the old Atmel Raven development kits lying around.

Thanks for the reply - I was already thinking mine were possessed somehow. I haven’t found any pattern yet or any external trigger that would cause this issue. My plugs sometimes turn on/off within seconds of each other, but sometimes it’s minutes or hours.
I upgraded to the latest deCONZ version, upgrade to the latest Conbee firmware, but without luck.

Nothing suspicious in the logs yet, of course it stopped failing when i setup debugging…
no visible mqtt commands being sent from hass so moving on to the zigbee logs
maybe there is some group command being sent? I’m not even sure where to look for that.
I’ve used all of my luck so far with a mix of Ikea, Hue, Mercator, Xiaomi, Tuya and Yale.

I’m using 9 of the Telstra/Sercomm plugs now, after trialling 3 without issues for a period, and I’ve had the occasional switch just turn itself off. One happened a day after I added it to the fridge of all things, and my backup automation (“keep this thing on”) failed - the missus was not impressed. Luckily we were home and could manually turn it back on.
Only 2 of the 9 have hiccupped at all. The rest have been solid. I’ve tried to set availability to 1 minute in z2m, so that I can catch them going offline and automate turning them back on again. However, after a power outage, some of them remained “offline” for hours.
I don’t suppose there’s a way to set them to default to On after a power outage, is there?
I’m mainly using them for power monitoring, being the first decent affordable reliable Zigbee smart-plug with power monitoring I’ve found.
Not sure, but it works perfect with ZHA. One thing I’ve noticed in the few days of using it, I haven’t seen any End devices connect to it yet, but my router devices don’t mind it.

I’m trying to find the time to go through the zigbee documentation to find out if there is some sort of group command being sent, but at the moment I’m overloaded at work.
I’m fairly certain its not home assistant causing the problem and some of us are using zha and others zigbee2mqtt.
