Australia - Electrically Certified Hardware

It can operate in Bluetooth or 2.4GHz wifi modes. The manual is available on that page.

Right yes didn’t see the manual. It has quite a bit of detail.

But I think the WiFi connectivity might be via a Bluetooth gateway?

So I think they’re BLE? Maybe traditional Bluetooth too? Not sure though.

I think you’re right.

Great to see this effort.

Could you please refer to NZ as well as we have a combined regulatory regime for approval of electrical devices? In fact the “standard” is an AU/NZ one.

My friend, be careful making ‘modifications’ or ‘transplants’ to devices. Because if something goes wrong and your house burns down or heaven forbid you end up killing someone you are pretty much screwed.

You may have other options available to you.

It’s nothing more than alternative firmaware.

Thanks for thinking of my safety . I have flashed tasmota on many devices before and pretty handy with a soldering iron

So you are saying that it will be AU certified/approved and OK to make these modifications ?

But is it AU Certified? Which is the topic of this topic  Dunno :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Please read the rest of this topic. That question has been discussed extensively.

Anyone got one of these electric blankets?

Understood :+1: Point taken

The OP and newer user’s are looking for AU certified device’s.

To my understanding  ANY modifications to electrical devices is strictly a no-no; and therefore should not even be mentioned here in this topic perhaps ?

Maybe this needs to be looked at by the MODS ?

Because any reputable Sparky in AU knows this as well.

Really, alot of the discussion/questions don’t even belong in this topic and deserve their own topic if that is how people wish to proceed.

Something like an ’ Uncertified/Modified AU ’ topic perhaps ?

This topic has become HUGE. It might be an idea to get the broom out and sweep out what does not belong here.

Just saying.

Correct, for physical modifications. The certification relates to clearance and creapage distances, voltage and current ratings etc. Changing the firmware doesn’t affect it.

Thanks for enlightening us all about this; it is appreciated :+1:

Firmware Mods = OK

Hardware Mods = BAD

Wouldn’t it be easier to stick an ordinary electric blanket into a controlled socket or power thingy?

Possibly - the one I have currently has a “smart” soft button controller so cutting/reinstating the power doesn’t restore the temp setting.

It just popped up on OzBargain, don’t think I’ll actually purchase one.

@sparkydave , question if I may ?

With the firmware side of things, are we as users covered by a dodgy Supplier firmware update or user flash if something goes wrong ?

Would we still be covered by our insurance policies or does it get more complicated ?

I’m sure others have questions like this and it would be good to know.

Thanks :+1:

Unfortunately insurance companies are run by lawyers who will try anything to not pay out so who really knows what the outcome would be in any of those cases. However as I’ve stated previously in this thread, if the device becomes a blob of molten plastic who is going to know what firmware was on it? Only you.

In most cases the device would not be able to catastrophically fail due to a firmware issue. For example, I tried many ‘wrong’ firmware configs before finding the correct settings for a bulb I was flashing. The worst that happened was that the colours didn’t work correctly.

Thanks, good info for people to know and see these comments. Appreciated.

Wow, hopefully, this does not happen or hurt anyone of us in the future.

Like you said with the insurance companies, they have a lot deeper pockets than all of us. I’m pretty sure they could also look into all your purchases and Internet browsing info and whatnot too. All it would take is seeing another wall plug or light switch in the property for their alarm bells to go off.

All the best and take care
