That’s correct. With so, so many smart devices theses days, there really isn’t a point and click solution for every single device that’s out there. I reckon that a gifted member within this awesome community will come up with a solution to this and many more problems in the future.

You can also just create a template switch.

I’ve not created a template switch before, but just read up on it and quite powerful. Half considering dropping the ZHA config and doing it this way instead!

Can you do this with a regular old school hot water system?

I don’t know. I know the Sanden is designed to have a peak/offpeak relay and requires a period of at least 4 hours of continuous power per day.

You would have to check with the manufacturer of your system.

From what I know, most are able to be used with a switching relay, you just need one of appropriate siizing for the task.

What wifi/zigbee ceiling fans are people using ?
I need about 4 with good airflow for our bedrooms

If the wifi module is in the fan, do we get it wired permanently on, so the old light switch doesnt turn it off, but use app/voice control ?

Plenty of them discussed above. eg. Previously these could be flashed for pure local control but now you need to chip-swap them to get that functionality, otherwise you can use the Tuya cloud service.

Correct, or using the wireless remote that generally comes with the fan controller.

Thanks Dave,

Is it legal to have then hardwired so always powered, or must they have a switch to meet code ?
I have wondered about this with some zigbee floodlights as well

I don’t know wiring standards but I think it may be more feasible to have two sockets for lights, one switched and the other either permanently live or switched at a separate ‘HA control panel’.

@sparkydave Is this a legal and acceptable approach?

You can have the fan permanently powered (using only HA / the wireless remote) to control it. For ease of resetting in the event that the device ‘hangs’ I would recommend leaving the original light switch wired normally but simply left on.

There is no clause mandating a light switch in the standard. Socket outlets must have switches.

Thanks, yes its much easier to pair/reset if there is a switch, guess I could just 3d print something to cover the switch

I’m not a fan of the Brilliant fan, but have seen these two, the skyfan moves ALOT more air, but is more expensive

On another topic

I have a light switch which has a two way light (with another switch)
Is it possible to replace only one of the switched with a smart switch like the below, and keep the standard switch in the two way config, or do I need to replace both ?
There are other tights on the same switch which I want to make smart (switch instead of globes) hence the 4 gang
I prefer zigbee over wifi

The Brilliant link I posted is just for the controller, which you can use with any AC fan you like, so it gives you the opportunity to pick a fan style you like

Technically it’s possible to use a smart switch and a regular switch in a two way configuration however HA will not know the status of the light if switched from the regular switch. There are ways around this but not with the device you linked to.

I have a setup in my house where I changed a two way circuit to be smart using two regular switches connected to a single Z-Wave switch.

@wrcvr4 I have the arlec grid connect dc fans and use the local tuya integration. You still need to set them up on the cloud to get the key but after that the communication is local.
The latest release of local tuya uses the updated fan integration so you can access as many speeds as you device allows.

Thanks,
I think I understand how that works, it needs a wire from both switches to the single smart switch, so either trigger it (assume momentary button switches)

Which smart switch would you suggest to work with a normal one ?

Other option is to put a module behind the normal switch (non 2way) and automate just the lights I want, but this gets more expensive then the whole switch quickly

Thanks @tinglis1

Unfortunately the wife doesn’t approve of those fans :frowning:
But in theory any tuya fan should now allow for all supported fan speeds ?

Exactly :+1:

has anyone used this fan controller ?

Wondering if it supports more then 3 speeds (i.e. anything the fan supports)
