Best Way to Set Up Energy Monitoring with Home Assistant?

Hello all,

I am relatively new to Home Assistant and am slowly building my smart home setup. I recently added solar panels and a battery system, and I’m now looking for the best path for energy monitoring- showing real-time usage, generation, and battery stats all in one place.

I am aware of something called the Energy Dashboard, and I have heard some good things about it; however, I am unsure about which devices or integrations are best. I have heard people mention Shelly EM, ESPHome, Smart Meters etc, but I don’t know where to start, or what is easy to setup and maintain.

I came across this website:https://community.home-assistant.io/t/20-amp-outlet-with-energy-monitoring/what-is-power-bi

Does Home Assistant work with third-party inverters, or hybrid battery systems in general? I am just worried that my setup will unintentionally pull power from the battery when it shouldn’t.

If anyone has a good beginner guide, tips for me, or just wants to share their setup, I would appreciate it. I am hoping to get something that is reliable, accurate, and not overly complicated.

Thanks in advance- and I look forward to learning from this fantastic community! :raised_hands:

There’s some background reading in the energy section of the Home Assistant Cookbook:

What do you mean third-party inverters? But there is definitely community support most likely for all of them though.
