Can I create a sensor to notify me when audio is playing?

Could one connect the wires from one channel of a stereo cable (call it the “Right” and “GND” wires) to an ESP32 and create a sensor that triggers when audio is playing? I tried ADC on pin 34 today and it didn’t seem to work.
