I bought a Home Assistant Voice Preview out of desperation to find a decent replacement for Amazon Alexa.
Aside from the nightmare trying to get it setup, I can now control my smarthome devices via voice, which gets me halfway to where I was with Alexa. However, I am struggling in getting the smart assistant side of things working.
I signed up for Home Assistant Cloud, ChatGPT, set an API key, manually downloaded and installed various addons such as whisper, piper, Wyoming, speech-to-phrase, OpenAI Conversation.
I’ve tried every combination of every settings I can find, for pretty much everything when I asked a question, Voice Preview just spins with a blue led for a minute then stops with no output or response.
It seems like anything involving local processing works. Home Assistant Cloud sometimes gives a response, but it’s usually “I’m a voice assistant so can’t answer that”. I’ve followed along with video guies, but it seems most of the guides I’ve found had similar issues, however as they are half a year old I would’ve hoped things would be working now.
Is it really the case Voice Preview just doesn’t really work?
It’s the whole reason I bought Home Assistant Green and spent the past 2 days trying to get things working.
At my current state my family just prefer to continue using Alexa despite it’s terrible state so I’m hoping there’s a chance at fixing Home Assistant Voice.
Yes you can, that option is only to get information from the web, but you still have control of your devices that, but only if you have your devices exposed,
so i guess in your configuration is something wrong, what version of esphome do you have and what’s in your VA PE ?

i’ve set all text to speech and speech to text as home assistant cloud instead of piper/whisper and the agent is gpt.
but i cant control any local devices and she gets confused by any queries

ok i found the start conversation feature to interact by text, and things seem to work, so it must be the text to speech and speech to text part failing?

ok using debug mode helped prove that it was struggling with piper and faster-whisper/speech-to-phrase with no text found and couldnt convert errors, so
i switched back to home assistant cloud for speech-to-text and home assistant cloud for text-to-speech
and suddenly i can actually control smarthome devices and ask chatgpt questions and get responses. i’m a bit confused by this as i had that previously. but it seems to work for now.

disable automatic and correct your IP, and test piper, if you already pay subscription to nabu casa you don’t need piper or whisper, even if you have the latest voice PE you don’t even need openwakeword
