Cheap Light Switch

Hey HA_Rookie,
the switch you linked looks interesting… how will you connect it to HomeAssistant?
Please keep us posted on this switch, I’m curious to hear how well it fits into European in-wall mounts and how it works with HA.
Hmm… I just read a review in that shop: Seems the switch lacks EU certificates and hence might get refused by customs. I don’t think I’ll install something like that in my place…
But I’m still curious if it works for you (if you dare) or if you find another solution, as I also seek something like this. Extra challenge here: I have 3 switches controlling one light (“Kreuzschaltung” in German).
Cheers,
Klaus

It’s basically an EU product from France with a fire-secure chassis. You can also order it from France directly.

You can control it with HA like any other RF 433Mhz switch.

Theresa are also multi-way switches available for “Kreuzschaltungen”

Hello did you managed to make it work? Could you tell me what did you put on your HomeAssistant server to connect to all the switches?
I am wondering on how to achieve a similar solution, but I am afraid of replacing all my house switches :frowning: and then it does not work properly

I received the hardware but did not get managed to replace my switches so far - Keep you updated

Hello

I AM sorry to ask again but how did it went? U managed to do it? Does it work correctly?

Not yet - I assume to get it managed in January

Hi HA_Rookie and all the rest! I’m new here and started with HA this month. I got manage a sonoff with it but I have the same needs you have. HA_Rookie, please let us know your improvements with the VL-C701R-11.

For a smart bulb, those switch are a solution:

Receive the 433mhz signal on HA and make it control the light bulb.

Or those for a standard switch (integrate a remote 433mhz relay)

I think if you tried that solution with this tutorial you will be a good results.

Just to close this topic. I get rid of the Livolo devices, because I made the experience if you cannot get the state it’s unusable if you have a hardware switch on the wall.

I installed the [https://www.itead.cc/sonoff-touch.html](http://Sonoff Touches) with that firmware https://github.com/arendst/Sonoff-Tasmota

I’m almost happy with this solution, but sometimes they are “difficult” to press if you are using them as hardware switch. MQTT implementation is working perfectly with them. They are not compatible with 2-way/3-way switching.

For that purpose, at least in Germany, you can use Homematic M-LC-Sw1PBU-FM with homegear as hub. They are only compatible to 2-way/3-way switching with that custom firmware:

They are also available as dimmer for 1-way switching.

but thats no cheap solution.

i have many 433 mhz switches, so i cant get the state from them. but they are 99,9% reliable.
some of them are not but those i just take out and place a new one (oke i am lucky and have lots of them lying around.)

the other side is that i havent used a hardware switch anymore since i have implemented HA (in certain rooms)
and now i am implementing Alexa options, i feel i never need to use wallswitches anymore.
if i built them in its only because you want to be able to use it when the automation is unreliable.

You can get the Sonoff touches for about 15$ - That’s pretty fair.

Agreed. If you live alone you can use 433 mhz switches like the livolos or DIYs, but if you have wife/children you need to “support” the wall switches

In my point of view a cheap solution are the Sonoff switches. For 2-way/3-way you need to invest to the Homematic switches.

we live here with 3 people. but i still find no need to have wall switches.
just make sure light is on when the wive and kids want light, so they dont have the need to turn it on
using motion detectors can help a lot with that.
in the implementing period, make sure that you keep the lighting on a bit more then is needed.
just do everything that takes away the need to use a wallswitch and after a few months they are used to not using it.

the livingroomligths turn on short before sunset. turning them of is done with mobile, tablet, PC or Alexa.
so why should i need a wallswitch?

It’s my approach for the moment. If I have integrated movement sensors in every room and it’s working well it could be that I agree to your approach. For now I decided to support the hardware switches.

I’ve started using xiaomi push switches to augment (read gradually replace the usage of) wall switches.
These switches are about £5 each from china and work with xiaomi gateway (zigbee). The xiaomi component is in beta but works great.
they have three click modes (click, double click, long hold and release).
Based on these its possible to have:
on- click
off - double click
ramp up brightness from low to max - hold and release at desired brightness.
Can control a group not just one lamp.
Also can control a scene not simply on/off/

e.g. I have one at top of stairs on first floor of home with:
click - all downstairs lights and switches off
double click - few downstairs lights on low brightness for nighttime emergency
etc

Love these things.
but downside is the switches are still there

Hi, could you please link what kind of switches you use?
I tried to google “xiaomi push switch” but got no clear results

Would also like to know about the xiaomi.

But, perhaps not the best to use as a light switch but still useable and for very cheap are the amazon dash buttons using dasher. You can pick up the dash buttons for $1 if you sort by cheapest on amazon. Install dasher and you can use them to control home assistant.

For example I put one on my apartment door as a little doorbell just for fun which plays a small ring on my chromecast audio when someone presses it. $1 to set it up, not super useful but whatever.

Hi

This is the switch:

You also need a xiaomi zigbee gateway, which supports a range of sensors:
http://www.gearbest.com/living-appliances/pp_344667.html

Check the thread for the gateway support in HA:

I used dash buttons also via dasher.
I bought 5 on prime day in UK for £1 each.
The only issues are:

  1. It takes ~5 seconds for the dash to wake up, connect to wifi (quicker with DHCP with static allocated IP)
  2. Sometimes dasher seems to not catch the arp packets from the dash
  3. Requires more router config if you want to properly intercept the dash call back to amazon and turn LED green on success (I never bothered with this, so my dash buttons LED turns red on all presses)

Dash are good and super cheap, but I def prefer the Xiaomis now due to responsiveness and three click modes.

The best I could find on Amazon.com (US) was $3.99. Still not terribly expensive but I’d like them for $1!
