Connecting Tuya temp sensor

I just bought a couple of Tuya temperature sensors as an experiment. I’m trying to get them to talk to HA. I have a SkyConnect stick connected. I have installed the ZHA add-on. If I click Add Devices via This Device, it doesn’t find anything. I guess the problem is that I am not successfully putting the temp sensors into pairing mode. The devices are small, round, white, with a thermometer symbol on the front. There is a small hole on the front with a blue LED behind it. There is a small hole on the bottom with (I presume) a reset switch inside. If I press the reset switch the blue LED comes on,. If I hold the reset switch of 5 seconds the blue LED goes off for an instant then comes on again. If I hold the reset for 10 seconds the blue LED goes off. What is the correct way to get these devices into pairing or discovery mode?

Thank you - Rowan

There was no manual included ?

Yes, there was. It was entirely in Chinese, so not much use to me I’m afraid…

Rowan

Not much to go on. Do you have a link ?

the answer to your question is very dependent upon the device. there’s not a consistent way across all. so without us knowing the specific device, i don’t think we can tell you. and even if you give us the device model, unless one of us happens to have that device, then all we’d do is try search the internet for a manual, which you could do just as well.

however if you’ve got the instructions in chinese, try google translate. it’ll translate an image of text.

I use these Tuya sensors, but with a Zigbee Tuya gateway (not with SkyConnect stick). And yes the pairing is ok after 5s press in the small hole.
I use the Tuya integration with SmartLife App to obtain the device in HA.

There’s a button. Hold it in until it flashes.
Generally these things come from the factory ready to pair as soon as you plug in the battery…

Here is a link to the devices that I bought:

The device is labelled TT081 (plus some chinese)

Found the following instructions from another seller

You don’t seem to be doing anything wrong, but are you sure those devices are supported in ZHA?

Majority of the time with Tuya branded devices you need to add them to the Tuya/Smartlife app first then they will show up in your home assistant Tuya intergration.

If you are still having issues with that model then I can recommend the SNZB-02P as that is working without issue so far as my loungeroom sensor:

I have one of the Tuya gateways, amd will try it. I think they make two types, one Zigbee to Ethernet, and one Zigbee to WiFi. Which do you have? Mine is the WiFi one. I have installed the Tuya Smart app on my phone. I have installed the Tuya integration in HA, which shows one hub (presumably the WiFi to Zigbee one). How do I add a Zigbee device to the hub so that HA can see it? I suppose that I need to put the device into pairing mode. How do I do this? The temperature sensor if I press the reset button shows a blue LED. After about 5 seconds of holding the reset button the blue LED goes out very briefly. Then after about 10 seconds it goes out permanently. I have not found a way of getting the LED to flash. How do I put this device into pairing mode? Also I have a WiFi Circuit Breaker model EAKCB-T-M made by Earu and saying that it uses Tuya/Smart Life. I have successfuly connected this to the app on my phone. How do I now get it to connect to HA?

Thank you - Rowan

Once you have a device added to your Tuya or Smart Life app you need to then make sure that the tuya integration is linked to one or both of the apps that you use via the generated ID code in the settings of the app found under me > tap the cog icon in the top right > account and security, you will be asked to scan a generated QR code from the HA intergration via the app to confirm the link to the user ID.

It will then populate all with all devices linked to that app/user id after a min or so.

I have Tuya WIFI/ZigBee 3.0 Gateways called “Smart Gateway” on their box.
They are connected to:

  1. ZigBee temperature/humidity sensors: ZTH02
  2. ZigBee door sensors: ZD08

The gateway device must be paired to SmartLife with a 2,4Ghz WIFI (+ Bluetooth, I think but I don’t know why). Sometimes it’s automatic, sometimes no, so you can reset the device by pushing a pin 10s in the small hole near the mains.
The red light is for WIFI (always on) and the blue one for ZigBee (flashing a little rarely).

After that, the sensors must also been paired in the same way.

All these devices come to HA via the Tuya official integration, either automatically (after a while!), or you can do that manually with the “reload” option in the three dots panel of this integration.

In HA the result is:

  • device “Zigbee Gateway (unsupported)” with no entity
  • device “T & H Sensor (9yapgbuv)” with 3 entities (temp/hum/battery)
  • device “Contact Sensor (1bwpjvlz)” with 2 entities (door/battery)

It’s sometimes hard to pair devices with SmartLife: unplug, reset, retry and when the device is visible in SmartLife, it always appear later in HA (sometimes “unsupported” but I don’t care since the ZigBee sensors are availables).

Hope this help you…

EDIT: The first time you use the Tuya integration in HA, follow the reply of @TH3xR34P3R above.

Does this system mean that it always needs my phone to be turned on, with some battery left, and within range (bluetooth or WiFI?) of the gateway Does it always transmit the data from the device to my phone to HA (or maybe from the device to my phone to some cloud service to HA)? So it will stop working if I leave the house (with my phone)? Or once everything is configured can it work without using my phone? Has no-one written an integration that can talk directly from HA to the Zigbee devices, via (e.g.) the SkyConnect stick?

Thank you - Rowan

Once its connected to the app and the user ID linked to your HA install integration then the only requirement is to have the internet active when using devices through the tuya integration (you can later try get local tuya/tuya local setups going to get a less cloud reliant setup for those that go through the apps - that’s a headache in its own right so just easier for the next thing).

ZHA and Zigbee2MQTT are the main integrations for true zigbee devices that don’t rely on a cloud connection to work and its what most folks migrate to or have setup from the start to minimize connection reliant issues as they connect directly to your hub device when in pairing mode.

I have swapped all my primary smart plug controlled devices to be using the v2 smart plug from ozsmartthings but still have the tuya based lenovo plugs I got from jb hifi for less important things like toggling the charger for my vacuum cleaner.

I use the HA integration for my streamdeck xl to control most of my home setup at this time when I am at my desk:

Phone is used when I am in bed or via openvpn through the router when I am heading out to manage things.
