Control4 and NEEO

Yesterday, I saw a tweet that Control4 bought NEEO, so you cannot buy NEEO from their website.

I’m not happy that NEEO decided to take risks and let Control4 bought them up.

What are your thoughts?

My experience is shortly after Control4 acquires a company they terminate customer access to product support. I can no longer contact technical support for my Pakedge or Triad products. Not a good day for existing NEEO users.

Well, it seems the only alternative is the Harmony Hub, which I don’t want. I won’t assign a Harmony Hub a default gateway as I won’t provide the Hub Internet access. I can only have my hub communicate to Home Assistant within the same subnet.

I don’t know how well I can learn to forget NEEO. If I do think of NEEO, I would think of Control4. I won’t back any projects from anyone in Kickstarter/Indegogo. Because I don’t have a disposable income, backing any project would be too risky due to lack of trust and honesty.

Correct, they’re killing DIY for it:

"The DIY ends here for Neeo. Control4 is squarely focused on the custom installation channel – a strategy that has worked well for the company and its dealers. Company revenue grew 11.6% year-over-year in 2018 to $272.5 million, and delivered $39.7 million in non-GAAAP net income – a 26% year-over-year increase from 2017.

What’s good for the pro channel, however, will sting the Neeo DIY market for the time being. Control4 has ceased selling Neeo products, and will provide only “critical updates” for the next 24 months"

So what’s the alternative? None? DIY is better than pro market anyway. (Sigh)

I wonder who can take over where NEEO left off without ever being bought by dealer-only company again!?!?

Well, HA and it’s array of supported hardware may not enter Control4s’ encrypted Zigbee mesh, but scripting RF/IR commands is rapidly coming into focus. It’s on my mind as I review product specifications for the future.
