Feedback for forums upgrade

EDIT: The forums are living again!

We’re now on Discourse version 2026.1.3, which is not the latest version of it but it opens up a lot of new options for us.

Please let me know here if you spot any issues or have feedback! Some things like the text edit box have changed (markdown isn’t the default, for example, you need to click the M next to the A), but if you see something broken I’d like to make sure we can address it.

Apologies for the short notice, this was intended to go up last week and I failed to confirm with our ITC team. :see_no_evil:

Tomorrow May 5 the forums will be set to read-only mode from 2026-05-05T06:00:00Z - 2026-05-05T14:00:00Z

This means you will be able to read the forums but will not be allowed to create new posts until the maintenance is completed.

Why?
The forums simply need a Discourse update. This will also help set up the ability to do more modern changes to the forums.

We don’t expect it to take the entire length of time scheduled to update, but are setting expectations just in case it’s needed.

Feel free to chastise me for this late notice - I deserve it.

Discourse has a Date and time widget:

2026-05-05T06:00:00Z - 2026-05-05T14:00:00Z

I think that should be displaying localized times for everyone. If not, it will show a few timezone variations when you click on it

Because you should always have a backup. Duh.

We are so back, chat. :tada:

Please let me know if you see any issues! The new text box is kinda nifty… :eyes:

But what are you doing to get the audience back? :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

They’ll find their way back, they always do after maintenance. XD

Get the audience back?

I didn’t notice it was gone.
Slightly different look though, all’s good. No carnage.

I guess boring changes are the best changes.

The number of forum users is significantly down, apparently.

My own impression is that posts are also more technical (er… obscure?) than they used to be, but that’s probably just me.

Not sure if this is just my phone doing this but when I press enter it seems to do a double enter.

Above I pressed enter once but it creates a new “chapter”.

it’s doing it on desktop too. They likely changed something, they being discourse.

I don’t think we actually publish these anywhere public, but we should!

This isn’t exactly on topic for this thread, but you’re not wrong. There’s a clear decline happening this year specifically. I’d have to dig further to see if your feelings are on target. The community on these forums in general are often the power users and a lot of the changes we’ve made this year haven’t been for y’all - I suspect you are on the right track, though, in that the posts here are more technical and because of the less technical changes we’ve been doing the post count has been lower.

It’s not a double enter, per se, it’s a paragraph separation in rich text. If you click the M here you’ll get back to markdown and you will be able to double enter again. I dunno how this looks on mobile, though.

first of all, the editor has gotten real tiny, no matter the screen size…. why wont it widen when we change screen size.

posting code has become a fight with the editor. entering 3 back ticks and they auto disappear….

which is confusing as xxx because regular text and code now get mixed up all the time.

also, where did the c&p button go for the yaml in a code block?

line spacing is very very tall
