TL;DR - Forums will be read-only for an upgrade later, December 17 12am Pacific/9am CET, opening back up at 3am Pacific/12pm CET.
We’ve grown a lot here on the forums, and Month of WTH this year highlighted some glaring issues with how many requests these forums can handle. It was so bad earlier this month that one of our mods made a WTH post asking why the heck do the forums run on a potato.
Excellent question, one we have no answer for! So, instead, we’re just going to add a new potato. Throwing more tech at things always works, right?
As is the norm for upgrades, we need to shut down the forums into read-only mode to introduce our new potato with minimal issues. We’re hoping this is during a time that will impact the least amount of people. Everything should run smoothly, but if it doesn’t - well, I won’t know until I am awake so we’ll see if I wake up to this.
We appreciate your patience as we introduce a new potato to our little family. We’re excited to introduce you to them, and hope they will make our forums experience pain-free.
Notice how you had to qualify that advice? The math isn’t hard, it’s knowing what the reference point is that complicates matters. I know exactly how many hours my time zone differs from UTC, I don’t memorise all the other time zones.
I can look it up, but if the OP looks it up once, it saves squillions of others having to, which saves electrons and energy, thus saving the world! It’s a mission!!
If I had my way the whole world would run on a single timezone anyway.
Well, exactly. So why try to please two specific timezones? Especially one that is one of the least affected.
That’s a rhetorical question BTW - I fully understand why it doesn’t occur to people to think outside their own timezone, I was just making what I hoped was a helpful suggestion that in future, consider including UTC as a standard reference timezone when publishing schedules.
