Home Assistant regularly unresponsive/unreachable if I upgrade

I have Hassio installed on a Raspberry Pi 3B+

Everything worked fine with
Core version 0.114.3
Os version 4.14

Around October time I did a snapshot and upgraded both Core and OS
Home Assistant became very slow and sometimes unresponsive and/or unreachable
It normally sorts out with unplugging and plugging the power cord but it only lasts for a few hours

I then did a fresh new installation and restored the snapshot done before the upgrade.

Everything worked fine until two days ago when I decided to give it a go and try upgrading again (to Core version 2020.12.2 and Os 5.9)

Same problems, I feel I’m stuck on the Core and Versions I had in the snapshot I did in October and I cannot go past them if I want a usable system

Any errors in your logs?

Where should I look? Is it under Supervisor/System?
I see Supervisor, Core, Host etc, I’ll post those three (however these would be after restart and not after crash)

There are a lot of errors in your logs, you need to read release notes and breaking changes and then adjust your config accordingly, not just blindly update.

am I not looking for an error that appears when home assistant crashes? and is there a way to keep the logs after restarting so I can see what caused the crash?

Yes that would be ideal, however there’s a good chance that these errors may be related with your system crashes.

It’s now in a crashed state, but I cannot access the logs through samba or ssh and if I unplug the raspberry to restart it, the logs will be lost

As suggested, did you check the breaking changes? You should try updating one major revision at a Tim’s and use the release notes to find breaking changes and fix them before moving on to the next one… That is a huge jump from 0.114 to current…

I inserted the SD card into my windows laptop and recovered the file homeassistant.log in there; these are the last few lines of the file

How do I check for breaking changes if I’m only able to update to the latest revisions?

Restore from snapshot and then
From shell…
ha update --version x.x.x

Can I update Core to the latest version but do Home Assistant OS in steps?

You can update to a specific version of the supervisor, core & OS independently from the command line eg.

ha update supervisor --version 2020.12.7
ha update core --version 2020.12.1
ha update os --version 5.9

But I’ve always found updating to be a crapshoot, breaking changes or no… I just upgraded the core from 2020.12.1 to 2020.12.2, no breaking changes, just a very minor revision, and it nuked my entire system…, and after 6 hours of trying to restore it, I gave up, re flashed the SD card and restored from a snapshot.

Advice…, don’t leave it so long between updates, or you will get left behind with a raft of breaking changes to deal with. ALWAYS make a snapshot before you do any type of upgrade, and download it to somewhere safe.

I have totally opposite experience, upgrades are always smooth as butter, less than 5 minutes and I’m done normally.

Yep, like I said, its a crapshoot, works from some, not for others…, however, when it does go wrong, it goes WRONG. What I mean my this is that if it goes badly out of shape (eg. my last very minor update), then all of the command line tools used to roll back version also stopped working (at least in my case), and even trying to restore from a snapshot on the command line did nothing.

Consider yourself VERY lucky if you have never had any upgrade issues…

From what I read here in the forum there are countless of other people who don’t have any problem updating apart from adjusting the config for breaking changes.

But the main point why I’m probably “VERY lucky” is that I run Home Assistant Container and not Supervised/OS. And I made quite some updates (started with 0.3x)

It’s the breaking changes in core that are the problem so no.

I’d update the OS first as it’s probably not the issue. You have no control over the supervisor because it will automatically update itself.

Never had any issue at all for 3 years. I even run the beta versions.

You should never have to do this. There is always a reason and it’s always recoverable.

Good advice.

@DavidFW1960 You cannot in the same breath say you have never have any issues updating, and then say that every issue is recoverable, because it’s just not.

On my last minor update, once on the command line, it took 2 minutes to return from ‘ha core info’ command, and the system had a load average of 11, no UI, nothing in the logs. I tried a ‘ha supervisor info’ command which did not return anything after 30 mins. There is nothing to be done at this point apart from a wipe and restore.

I have never experienced such an unreliable update process with any other software distro, and these forums are full of similar stories.

Actually I CAN because I fix my issues such as they are in the beta. Every issue IS recoverable. I have never had an issue I couldn’t reverse or fix.
