I am relatively new to HA, so I’m a bit confused about the naming of entities. From what I’ve read, it has been a huge thing that you have a good scheme/pattern of how your entities are named.
But this is changing right now. In the release party of 2025.6, there has been some comments that this is becoming less and less important. So now my question is: Do the entity names matter at all (for now) - and how is this about to change in the near future? Should I still make a naming scheme? I am about to add a bunch of devices…
On the poweruser-casual-scale I consider myself somewhere in the middle. If I want to do some specific things, I don’t mind going small extra steps. But so far I never touched the configuration.yaml and am happy to stick to GUI elements whereever possible.
It’s true that there are more “user friendly” ways of handling devices than there were - with labels, areas etc - and this is certainly the direction of travel that the developers are taking, but they mostly relate to the GUI and some of them have serious drawbacks.
Entities are the building blocks of HA and if you expect to have anything to do with yaml at all in the future (even if it’s just to post code on the forum) you need to be able to identify them in a systematic way.
