Invalid authentication: Server response doesn't match our challenge on ip TP-Link

Hello Everyone, I am trying to add a Kasa HS200 Switch and I have the same issue. I tried the changing password method via the TAPO app, rebooted hass, and still the same issue.

Any pointers would be much appreciated.
Thanks!

Model: Kasa HS200
Hardware version: 5.26
Firmware Version 1.0.3 Build 240723 Rel. 192622

  • Core 2024.12.1
  • Supervisor 2024.11.4
  • Operating System 14.0
  • Frontend 20241127.6

Changing password in Tapo app also worked for me - I didnā€™t even change the password, just entered the same password again.

Ok, it seems like resetting the password in the tapo account on the app works but I have tried it at least ten times and it just wonā€™t work. ???

In my case, I have multiple Wi-Fi networks, where the TP-Link Smart Switch is on a different SSID, and HA is on another network. Once I re-configured the smart switch to the same network, it adds into HA with no problem.

ahhh. Iā€™m not alone in this pickle. My P115s are fine. I have 8 of them, but my cameras (C510W and C111s) have this problem.

Iā€™m with @ron7750 above having tried to reset the password on the app many times.

same here, already changed the password, ensured two-factor is off, rebooted hassos, made sure the device has internet connection, Iā€™m on the same network.
Iā€™m out of ideas

Exact same as you. I entered same password as new password at the TapoApp then back to HA integration to add Tapo device, then authentication was successful.

I have been having the same issue on some of my P100 plugs, 5 out of my 7 work just fine, but the others seem intermitant and now one of them wont authenticate no matter what i do.
they two with problems are both on the 1.5.5 firmware though so i think it might be something to do with that. is anyone else having issues with the 1.5.5 firmware on the plug?

This also worked for me thank you!

I successfully configured my device following the instructions provided by newstartech in this GitHub comment: TP-Link Smart Home integration cannot authenticate with Tapo C200 cameras. Ā· Issue #132526 Ā· home-assistant/core Ā· GitHub. The crucial step, in my experience, was enabling third-party compatibility within the Tapo Lab features.

Yep, I saw this was new and wondered if it might be the problem. You need to open the Tapo app and click:

  • Me
  • Tapo Lab
  • Third-Party Compatibility
  • Toggle on (allow the privacy risk)

I was having the same issue, however I realized my email had an extra space character at the end that was causing the error. Simply removing it did the trick.

Some more info if helpful:

  • 2 Tapo L510 bulbs.
  • Firmware: 1.3.1

I have a P115 that is not connecting to HA. The P115 is on firmware 1.1.3 Build 240523. I have 3 others that I was able to add no problem. They are on same firmware. I have made sure that Third Party integration is enabled in the App, changed my Password in the app but still get the authentication error. I am on HA 2024.12.5 Core.

edit: In the debug logs it looks like it is trying to use Kasa Protocol.

Resolved: I was setting up the plug with VPN enabled on my phone. I removed the plug from Tapo, reset it and then added it again. I was then able to add it to Home Assistant.

I thought this new idea would be it. But no.

Iā€™m logging in with email address. All my other Tapo devices work, including the other P304M. Have tried:

  • Resetting HA; rebooting whole server
  • Resetting device by holding power button for 10 seconds and re-adding it in Tapo app
  • Removing device from Tapo and re-adding
  • Moving device to location with strong WiFi
  • Changing password in Tapo app (to the same password)
  • Turning on third-party comparability
  • Both TP-Link Smart Home and TP-Link Tapo integrations
  • Edit: also tried waiting 24 hours and trying again

Iā€™m curious where the memory of this failure resides. It seems like it must be in the Tapo cloud somehow, since everything else has been reset.

I (sadly) havev the same Issue since a few weeks now. - My P115 stopped working and I thought ā€œI just reset them, and add them new to HA.ā€ but nopeā€¦

I get the exact same Error. - Iā€™ve tried nearly all the ā€˜solutionsā€™ that the others mentioned but so far: No Luck, still the same Errorā€¦

I canā€™t add those damn things. Not sure if Tapo really screwed something upā€¦

I had this problem with a new plug I bought, I did the allowing 3rd party thing and changing old password to new same password, I reset it and didnā€™t do the auto add discovered device, instead added it manually and then forgot to do it on ha, next day I tried to add it and it worked fine. Hopefully itā€™s just the auto add of the app.

I finally solved my issue.

Steps:

  1. Remove device from Tapo app
  2. Connect phone to same WiFi access point as device (this has never before been necessary, since all the routing works fine on my network and the initial setup uses Bluetooth)
  3. Add device in Tapo app
  4. Add device in HA using TP-Link Smart Home plugin

Two possibilities:
a) something in initial setup relies on being on the same WiFi network
b) itā€™s a completely random failure during setup and I finally got lucky

Thanks, that is the only thing that worked for me :upside_down_face:

Ivā€™e tried everything above. Same problem. Brand new Tapo-P110.

EDIT

So for me it was a username problem. Somewhere somehow the first letter of my username became a capital letter. It was saved in my password manager as all lowercase. The TAPO app is not case sensitive for username, however the HA authentication is.

Same for me, just a dummy password change works.
Thanks everybody!
