This only makes sense as github becomes M$. Who can trust what they do?
There has been some seriously overblown reactions to this purchase
Thats a very narrow minded view.
Out of the current tech giants Microsoft, Apple, and Amazon are happy to take your $$$ to provide a product or service. This is a very clear business model we understand.
It’ the Google’s, Facebook’s, etc that are not so clear. They happily provide services for free; to mine our data to generate $$$$.
So watching GitHub go to Microsoft makes me a heck of a lot more comfortable versus it going to a Google or Facebook.
I am curious. What has Microsoft done to your open source code?
I think overhyped concerns about what might happen, despite all evidence to the contrary, is a pretty poor reason to go through the effort of moving everything over in absence of any substantive need to do so. I’m not sure if you’ve been paying attention in the last 5 years, but MS today doesn’t operate like they had under Ballmer. They are already the largest user of GitHub and this transition makes a lot of sense.
If you want to move because of your own unfounded suspicions, that’s fine and well within your right. But it’s quite another thing to presume that everyone else is going to join you…
Haters gonna have, I suppose.
I’m an ant-Microsoft kind of guy. I feel more comfortable with Google acquiring GitHub than Microsoft. I’m a Google fanatic except taking too much control over Android’s theme as I like Nougat better than Oreo.
Alas, i don’t want to see this thread run its course, so what I can say is my view and stance with Microsoft from last decade still stand today, bring that I’m against Microsoft. With that said, it’s up to developers to decide if they want to move Home Assistant to GitLab. My thinking is the developers probably wouldn’t, but if they do, it would make me feel happier than staying with GitHub. I’ll be okay if Home Assistant stays in GitHub. It’s not the end of the world.
Windows 10 is mining your data.
