So as the title states. I am looking for plugs that do energy Monitoring that don’t cost an arm and a leg. it must be 100% local please. It is really hard to find these it seems because they say they support energy Monitoring but its through their app and not matter and if you join them via Matter it just gives you basic on/off features. They need to be 100% local that does not require a app or account to set them up just hit their AP, connect them to the Wifi or scan the matter code and good to go… Also I am in Canada
I will do Z-Wave but they are normally $50+ a plug, plus I really don’t want to jam up my Z-wave network up with energy reporting. Would love to know what you guys are using… I need a accumulated value please I don’t want to have to calculate the kWh used.
To that I’ll add that you need a device which allows you to reset the accumulated value.
I had some Zigbee devices which didn’t have this option and I had to jump through all kinds of hoops to get a daily total used. I had no use for their “lifetime” accumulated value. I ended up un-installing them.
This won’t help you in the WiFi or Z-Wave world, but before anyone else asks, the ones I replaced them with are Third Reality Zigbee smart plugs with power monitoring which I bought from Amazon. The price was reasonable and they work great so far.
Yeah I get you… For me I use a Helper Utility Meter for my accumulation because I have tariffs and I can have it reset on any value day week month… etc
For that price they better work, They are $60 CDN a piece! Man these things are so expensive! Also the crappy part is they are Matter over Thread… SO I would need to set that up on Home Assistant… Not terribly difficult but man the price just hurts Do you actually use that and can confirm it does power reporting over matter?
The Kasa are just going through certification for the new matter 1.3 with energy monitoring… KP125M I am in talks with their team and they are so close to getting this new firmware for push!! Then this will be the best plug for me anyways as they are $15 CDN a piece and matter!!
I wouldn’t be to sure about this. The matter specs don’t obligate to expose pretty basic features like “power on state”, “detach mode” and others (like OTA update) which means vendors can put this in their walled gardens and force the usage of their app and cloud infrastructure (including obligating to register with personal identifying information like mail or phone).
In a nutshell matter is the continuation of Zigbee and doesn’t allow full ownership and often only limited local control
According to them it will have the energy monitoring exposed over Matter. Their words not mine
"Thank you for your kind reply.
Energy monitoring is not currently supported on Matter, we are in the process of certifying Matter 1.3 and expect to upgrade to 1.3 between March and April, after which it will be supported for use. Please give us some more time.
In this case, if you are using a third party that supports Matter Energy Monitoring Feature, then you will be able to use this feature. Until then, we kindly recommend that you make use of the power monitoring on Kasa for now."
And yes I know your opinion on Matter LOL you make it well known on your posts I guess I am just hopeful. Even smart cameras we have today had to start at 0.1MP before they got to what they are today. It’s getting there slowly! NOW do you have a hub that supports these features that are coming out is the next questions. Glad I am using Home Assistant!
I’d be concerned about this with any TP-Link devices. They have a history of forcing devices to communicate through their cloud, although admittedly I’ve only experienced their WiFi devices.
I can’t speak to Matter, but all of my Zigbee devices are totally local control. No cloud involved. Or what I would call full ownership.
Essentially the right to repair/change/modify and extend functionalities.
For example you want to (re)use your smart plug as power meter only
What would be needed is to configure two simple things on the device:
The power on state to “always ON”
detach the button (if any) from toggling the relay.
That first sounds easy but doing this locally (without cloud account and app) might just not be possible for some devices, like matter certified ones
But it might be even worse and you find yourself not being able at all to set something like a “power on state” directly on your device and creating actually more problems and multiple point of failures
“Love, the freezer is off and everything inside is melting!” - “Oh sorry, just performing an HA update and forgot to manually check/switch the plug(s)…”
Oh BTW I think one thing that I was overlooking with Matter devices. So with a Z-wave or ESP device for example you have 100% control over all the configuration for the device. I have not seen the option to configure Matter devices? So If my TP-Link Kasa finally do get Matter 1.3 support it will give me the ability for power monitoring and on off support but there are like 15 options on a z-wave power monitoring device. so when is matter going to get full control support over devices that include configuration unless the point is that will be 100% controlled in the Hub… So I think I am now on the Matter sucks bandwagon till it give full control over configuration of the device.
