Lost connection to server AGAIN

I’m getting very frustrated with this app. I’ve had it running okay for a few weeks then a few days ago it’s gone saying I can’t connect to the server. I get a blank screen with the settings icon at the bottom right. I have a DHCP connection, my internet is fast, reliable and working ok. I have done a reboot with no effect.

I manually installed home assistant after installing Raspbian lite as the os on my Raspberry pi4. Should I scrap this and start again downloading the image.

Should I get a static IP address? Would it help?

A static IP address is definitely the best.

To be clear, a static IP address on you local network for your Pi running home assistant is pretty much a requirement.

For remote access you can use a dynamic public IP address from your ISP, you dont have to contact them for a static IP address. You would just have to use a dynamic DNS service (DuckDNS) or Nabu Casa.

Can I use wifi for local access to the server instead of an ipaddress

Wifi uses IP addresses.

Sounds like your RPi IP address might have changed? If you’ve never set it to static in your router the Pi will have a DHCP connection. Log into your router and see what the Pi’s IP address is, you might be able to login to HA at that address, and google your router model number for instructions on how to make the Pi have a static address.

Thanks very much for your suggestions and assistance. I’ve just got it working again. I decided to reinstall home assistant. I went through the manual install process then tried to run HASS. Nothing happened. Nothing came up on the monitor it just sat there and didn’t do anything. I deleted the app from my iPad then reinstalled it. I couldn’t get a connection so I left it, came back after a few hours and I got a connection with the original IP address and it seems to be working okay. Mind you I’ve got to reconfigure the ui.

I’m still not sure what went wrong or how I fixed it.

There was no need for that.

Exactly the same thing is going to happen again if you don’t follow @thoughton’s advice.
