Losing settings means the E2 chip has a problem, normally this chip could not problem, we have no solution for this issue.

Is there any chance of getting the Pinout for the Connector from the PCB (upper part) to the unit with Powersupply (part to be screwed into the wall)
There are 8 Pins soldered in my case (the pcb has 12holes and the silkcreen has numbers)
Pins are Starting at 3 up to 8
I assume there is Power 5V and ground somewhere and I want to find the trigger Pin for the relay and want to know if it is powered from the wall mounted piece itself or needs to be powered by one of the other pins.
My Device is a pretty old hardware revision and I never managed to put a firmware on it with working modbus/mqtt or similar. I want to keep the backpiece but add my own simple hardware on top with a display and some Buttons.

Yes, all MC6 could be reprogramed to new firmware, but because the old version hardware( before 2021) has different touch panel, backlight, LCD so those MC6 needs a different firmware, if you need to upgrade the old MC6 please take a picture of it then we will know which firmware fit for this.

Which model of your MC6 ? if it is heating version there are three terminals, - , RT2, RT- ：
1） - ， RT2 = remote air sensor, this will replace the internal sensor on the pcb if you set it in configuration menu.
2) - , RT1 = floor sensor, this sensor will limit the room floor temperature to avoid it is too hot if you enable this feature , you can set the max floor temperature in configuration menu.

I upgraded the firmware and the thermostat is working much better but the colors on the display are much dimmer/washed out. Seems like something is wrong with the blue component. Anyone recognize this? Did I break the display or is it some new setting?

I have the same problem as you and the brightness does not adjust. but touch is ok with 231z.

For the display it is because the LCD driver is different in new firmware, we will upload another firmware later today, you can try it .
About the backlight it is same issue, the old hardware has different backligh chip , we will mark the firmware name with OLD , so you can try this old firmware name .

Have you received the old touch version firmware ?
I have the same hardware as in this photo:
I thought it was the latest version of pcb and display, but the backlight setting is not doing anything. So am I wrong in believing this is the new version?
I also have this hardware but under the flat of the touch the date of the pcb is printed, mine is 21-11-2019.
However I noticed that with 231z the wifi connection is stable.
