Nest Thermostat: 2017 Solar Eclipse

I watched a video from Smarter Home Life about Nest Thermostat and 2017 Solar Eclipse.

As a Googler (Google Enthusiast), Nest Thermostat is cool! However, shouldn’t a thermostat be a thermostat and get just a message in my smartphone or tablet instead? I mean, I have reservations when it comes to creating a Nest account, which is something I don’t want to do, as I want to go local instead of having my temperature data be stored in the cloud. Plus, I already have a home server for storing data at home.

If the Internet goes down (could be outages), I want Home Assistant to monitor and control the temperature if I have multiple temperature sensors (Z-Wave, for example) throughout the house. Another thing I hold myself back is automatic updates as I did remember when an update can go wrong in the past, such as the baby crying when a woman checks the temperature of the baby and found out that the Nest thermostat isn’t working after the update to a thermostat must have bricked it. (Did a search… Here it is!)

Personally, as much as the thermostat is cool-looking and the fact that Google lets me know about the solar eclipse in Nest Thermostat is awesome, Although I’ve already answered my question by saying, “just buy a Z-Wave thermostat and call it done,” I really wish I could get the best of both worlds; I want that cool Nest thermostat, yet I want local control through Home Assistant that does not require Internet connection. I simply want a thermostat based in the fact that the “cloud” should only be an extension of the thermostat and not a requirement.

What I mean is in order to receive the kind of message, do I have to create an account in order to see it? Because I’m not too crazy for buying into cloud-centric devices such as Nest.

Well anyway, what do you guys think? If you see the message about solar eclipse in the video that I linked above, would you buy the Nest thermostat? Why or why not?
