I have been building a similar solution for rain metering with magnet and Zigbee based Aqara door sensor. (see ☔ DIY Zigbee rain gauge). It works perfectly and stable for over a year now.
Before I try to design something similar for the water meter, I’m wondering if there’s already a design at hand.
