Recent experience > 0.45 - dumps / zwave issues

Hi,

not sure where else to put this but I was wondering if anyone else is seeing odd behaviour recently?

My issues are that my zwave seems to stop responding, devices no longer reporting or automations based on zwave not executing /happening … no idea where this is coming from …

I run on a NUC, spinning disk with Ubuntu 16.04.3 LTS, latest builds and an Aeon Labs Zstick Gen5 devices I have connected are:

Aeotec ZW075 Smart Switch Gen5 (Z-Wave) (3)
Aeotec ZW090 Z-Stick Gen5 (Z-Wave) (1)
Aeotec ZW100 MultiSensor 6 (Z-Wave) (3)
FIBARO System FGMS001 Motion Sensor (Z-Wave) (2)
FIBARO System FGMS001-ZW5 Motion Sensor (Z-Wave) (3)
KAIPULEK Wireless Z-Wave Plus Door / Window Sensor (1)
Neo CoolCam Door/Window Sensor (Z-Wave) (1)
Neo CoolCam EU Wall Switch (Z-Wave) (2)

interestingly I cannot track the issue down to a single device not working because while one isnt working another seems to work fine - so chasing tails here …

I have already considered temperature issues on the Zstick and used an usb extension which however didnt change the behaviour/faults I was seeing.

I cannot use the healing functionality as it breaks zwave completely when I do it … in most cases only a complete shutdown/power down seems to help to cure it for a time - I tried restarting hass via cron every 24hrs to reduce this but this doesnt seem to work either … In addition to that hass seems to dump every now and then which makes this even more difficult to track as there is nothing in the logs …

question: obviously, how to track down this behaviour and is anyone else seeing similar things?

cheers
collse

So… I’ve had one Z-Wave mesh hang so far, and that was cured by a heal. If you can’t run a heal without it breaking things completely then:

  • You’ve got a faulty Z-Stick
  • The mesh is only borderline

If you look at the zwave entities, what do the numbers look like? My controller has zero for sentFailed, and retries is also zero for all my devices.

Edit: Can’t splel

the stick itself doesnt have any failures but the devices report failed sents … from 0 - 8 with an hass /server uptime of a bit more than 70 minutes … but it looks like zwave isnt fully up yet as some are still (cacheload) …

I’ve got mostly zeros for sentFailed on powered nodes, except for one that has a one. The battery devices have single digits values there

still waiting on a new stick and usb cable to potentially improve the situation but it still dumps …

If you are going to replace the stick, Aeotec does have backup software.

How many powered Zwave devices do you have? As @Tinkerer said you may be having a mesh issue. Look at how your devices are spread out. Can you move or add a device to get better coverage (powered only)

Core dump is a sign of a fatal error, either a major bug, or a hardware fault.

I’d suspect the latter. If it’s only HA that’s core dumping, then probably the fault is with the Z-Wave stick. It’s worth trawling the system logs (and checking for core files) to see if there’s anything else core dumping.

I have replaced the stick but results arent any better …

my devices are:

ground floor
light switch kitchen (powered)
motion sensor kitchen (powered)
light switch lounge (powered)
socket lounge (powered)
motion sensor lounge (battery)
light switch hall (powered)
motion sensor hall (battery)

1st floor
1 motion sensor at the bottom of staircase (battery)
2 sockets office (powered)
1 motion sensor office (powered)
1 motion sensor landing (battery)

2nd floor
1 motion sensor on top of staircase (battery)
1 socket (powered)

thats pretty much the setup I would guess this shouldnt have much of an impact on the mesh

after a lot of playing around with settings I believe this may be due to the usb bridge on my NUC … not sure what the optimal setting is but I could see if I change some parameters the stick stalls in neighbors forever …that may be an indicator of whats wrong …

Only the powered units will form the mesh (from my understanding), however yeah. It could be a USB issue, but I’d expect dmesg to spit out messages to support that (probably).

Not sure what is causing this but after everything seemed to work perfectly fine for a while last night I was greeted with the attached this morning - I might disable the midnight healing completely as a next step to see if that improves anything … it almost looks like the issue occurs when restarts / reinits / heals happen …

Tried to connect remotely just now to figure out it has core dumped again … will see when I get back home what the logs say this time

back on the vpn as too curious …

so nowI at least got an indicator but I am unable to trackback what line this causes might need to look into this more in detail how to get from address to line …

Make sure you don’t have filesystem corruption.

What else does the box do?

Do you actually get a core dump? Digging through some posts for segfault error 4 in libc-2.23.so is a mixed bag, but this one details somebody stepping through the diagnosis process.

as mentioned its no Pi its a bear metal which should not lead to corruption on spinning disks …

PiVPN, PiHole, glances, mosquitto etc - all nothing major and plenty of cpu&ram available …

but I installed a VM yesterday and monitor its behaviour at the moment …

Having a spinning disk or SSD with a journalling file system isn’t a guarantee that you can’t have a corrupted file.

Though that is true the likelihood with uptime without boots and low read/write cycles is quite low - Not sure what it is but I am on 17.04 now so all new kernel, libs etc too difficult to tell - I have disabled some components still but it seems to work fine fior the moment - if it stays that way I dont mind it and just keep it running in VMware instead of bear metal … knocking on wood and tine will tell - I want to see at least a week before I add the other components back in to see if it still fails …

It is simple enough to check the filesystem to make sure.

yeah fsck didnt bring up anything all good … I might just repurpose the NUC for something else if this works - might make things easier as well …

I moved my setup to a VM a month ago or so. I have been Ok with it but especially like having a nightly backup. I love being able to bring up a backup image and experiment with it, then blow it away if things go bad.
