Red and Green Blinking all the time

Dear community,

I recently purchased a Home Assistant Yellow device. Initially, I struggled with the installation because the indicator lights green and red were continuously blinking, and I couldn’t find any documentation addressing this issue. I decided to leave the USB drive connected to the device while searching for solutions. After approximately 30 minutes, I noticed that all the lights were blinking, including the yellow and the USB drive’s light, and the operating system finally began installing.

Everything worked perfectly for an entire week. However, today, while experimenting with the configuration files, the lights started blinking again, and the device became unresponsive. I checked the mounting of the CM4 module, and it is securely in place.

I attempted to use RPIBOOT to resolve the issue but without success. I don’t believe it’s a hardware problem since it was functioning flawlessly before.

I have been trying to reinstall the system but have not succeeded so far.

I would greatly appreciate any assistance or guidance you can provide to help me resolve this issue.

Welcome Bryan,

Here is a guide that describes the various LED patterns on the HA Yellow.
Home Assistant Yellow LEDs – Home Assistant Yellow).

Thanks, Michael. It looks like the pattern of both green and red blinking without stopping since the power adaptor is inserted is not in the documentation :frowning:

I did a short video showing blinking: https://youtube.com/shorts/3wWwcdz8wQY?si=iv2OPoY6rY1HkisJ

I believe I’ve found a workaround for the issue I was experiencing. Here are the steps I took:

- Flashed the NVMe Drive:
Used the Raspberry Pi Imager to copy the Home Assistant Yellow image onto the NVMe drive.

- Adjusted the Jumper Settings:
Moved the jumper from UART to USB (I'm not entirely certain of the final configuration, as I adjusted it multiple times).

- Booted the Home Assistant Yellow:
    Powered on the device.

- Observed Blinking Lights:
The yellow and red LEDs were blinking synchronously for several hours, similar to the video I previously posted. I decided to let them continue blinking.

- Lights Stopped Blinking:
After a few hours, the lights ceased blinking.
Checked network ports and noticed that port 8123 was closed.
Rebooted the device multiple times, but the port remained closed despite the lights appearing normal.

- Performed Standard Installation:
Unplugged the device from the power outlet.
Pressed and held the red and blue buttons.
Plugged the power back in, and after 10 seconds, unplugged it again.
Inserted the USB drive containing the Home Assistant image.
Plugged the power back in to initiate installation.

Successful Installation:
The LEDs indicated normal operation, and the installation completed successfully.

I spent several hours resolving this issue and hope that my experience can assist others facing a similar problem.

I still don’t understand the root cause of the two LEDs blinking for such an extended period. It would be helpful if an expert could provide insight into this behavior.

Your blinking is very much identical to bad PSU / short somewhere in the circuit / overloaded PSU: Board starts but power supply immediately shuts down after that. Many switch-mode PSU’s (if not all) in the case of output overload (or bad PSU, like bad capacitor etc) does exactly like your blinking - it tries to restart appr. every second or so.

Did you try to change power supply?

Yeah, the problem became intermittent. I contacted the seller and they will send another power supply, I will post the results here in a few days.
