I was just replacing some of my old Ethernet cables with nice, new verified Cat 6a ones from Monoprice the other day, and this stood out to me like a sore thumb as well. The only orange light on my gigabit switch! :smiley:

I have the slzb-06p7 - Unifi PoE+ switch. Device powers on using POE (yellow LED on side of slzb device) however the link light is off. Nothing. Not sure what to try. Iā€™ve tried switching the port profiles, different cables, etc. Nothing. Havenā€™t tried reflashing device with other firmware however looks like Iā€™m not alone on this issue.

Itā€™s faulty like mine and many others, contact support for a replacement. They are pretty good.

Clearly seems to be an issue with the choice of LAN chip, wonder how many just gave up and used usb?

I wrote support. Not sure if it matters however I purchased mine off AliExpress and it took a few weeks to arrive. I tried a couple of other things as well, powering from USB C to USB C and USB A to USB C. Only the USB A to C actually powered the unit. (Unit didnā€™t even turn on with USB C to USB C). Even when unit turned on with USB A to C, when I plugged in ethernet address, the link light on the switch never turned on.

I wrote to support through the support link on the SMlight website. Not sure if they will replace it. In the meantime Iā€™ve ordered another unit, this time a slzb-06 rather than a slzb-06p7. I donā€™t mind experimenting and tinkering, however honestly the wait times for these units to arrive (like 2 weeks) really burns my toast since when these devices donā€™t work, itā€™s like forever to get a replacement.

Is trying to flash newer firmware off any value? Do I use small paperclip to short the pins or would you suggest something else?

Quick update after a lot of trial and error:

Perhaps it has nothing to do with the SLZB-06 device but rather my switch. Iā€™m not sure why I didnā€™t come across this in the documentation. The device itself has a default wireless AP you can connect to when in ethernet mode. Itā€™s possible to connect directly to the device itself since it serves as a wireless AP from another wireless device such as a laptop or phone. Once connnected to the device I discovered you can opt to choose whether the SLZB-06 device connects to internet using ethernet or wifi. If you choose wifi, the AP mode will be turned off and will default to client mode. For me, I could connect to my wireless router with the SLZB-06 in wireless client mode and update the firmware via this process. The strange thing for me is that my device can function in wireless AP mode but it can not for some reason use an ethernet connection (either using DHCP or assigning static network parameters). The device can be powered using POE exclusively, but it canā€™t create a network link. For me to use the device it must use a wireless connection to the router and not a hard wired connection.

I looked at my unifi setting for the port, and there isnā€™t a lot of options, Iā€™ve tried every mode in addition to auto negotiate:

Iā€™m not certain if its a network card issue at this point of the device or a unifi switch port problem.

Itā€™s a red herring, I had the same issue. I had no issues get a network connection while using WiFi but never through the ethernet port.

My suspicion is that the chip being used for LAN is not great.

I went down a rabbit hole of changing routers, switches etcā€¦ I highly doubt itā€™s anything wrong with your network.

I just received my slzb-06m and I have similar issue where the device was powered on by my PoE switch (Netgear GS724TP) but the lights on the port of the switch and the device were off, so device was not reachable since impossible to get a network connectivity while powered on.

It looks like there is an issue with auto-negotiation on the port, I configured the duplex mode from auto to full AND port speed from auto to 100 Mbps (you need to do both) on the port where the slzb-06m is connected and now I am getting a network connectivity and can access the device without any issue.

The Chipset (LAN8720A) used only supports 10/100 mpbs, auto-negation may be an issue on some switches that gravitate towards 1000 mbps.

You are right on the money with setting it to 100/Full as 100/Half-Duplex isnā€™t universally supported and a hangover from 10mbps links

A GOOD WORD - from me, i have three SLZB-06ā€™s (3xZig networks) running POE on my Mikrotik POE switch. Solved everyone of my zigbee problems. Best money i spent in a while.

I found this thread while looking for something unrelated to the LAN issues. Maybe I was lucky, but mine just worked out of the box. Some cheaper LAN chips do have issues with auto-negotiation, so I would definitely turn that off and manually set the port on the router to 100mbps full duplex if you have any sign of LAN issues. My Ubiquiti Unifi setup was worked with this one out of the box, but I prefer to not use auto-negotiation anyway and have manually set the speed, even though I had no issues. As a note, I have the SLZB-06M, but the only difference between the M and non M version is the Zigbee chipset. The M version uses the SiLabs chip, the non M uses the Texas Instruments chip.

I noticed some mention of Zigbee channels in this thread also, Some people get confused by channel numbering as Zigbee Channels 11 to 25 directly overlap WiFi 1 to 11.
25 is a little above 11, but pretty well in the sideband lobe of 11.
Doesnā€™t help the LAN issue, but this could help if you are having Zigbee connectivity issues.

Yea I think although the LAN Chip used is a common one, it is on the cheaper end.

Unfortunately I am using unmanaged switches in my house which most people probably do, there is no real way of turning off auto-negotiation.

This is true, and in this case Iā€™d recommend using the device as a USB device instead of Ethernet, as much of a pain as that can be. A lot of those unmanaged home routers are also not PoE, so using the Ethernet and PoE, the main selling point of the SMLight product, is likely not possible.
Iā€™d probably go with the SLZB-07 series, which are USB based. These have good range with an external antenna, much better than the little dongle style ones, and they just connect USB. With Zigbee being a mesh, these can work well even if not central.
The other option is to buy a small, cheap switch that supports basic management. Even a PoE version can be relatively cheap these days. I would suggest the average home user just wanting basic stuff likely wouldnā€™t buy an SLZB-06 anyway as they are a more advanced setup.
I was lucky with my one I think, It just worked out of the box, no issues at all. But I am using Unifi switches and maybe the auto negotiation works better on prosumer products than on consumer products.

Edit: Just as a thought, has anyone with issues with this LAN in the SLZB-06 tried forcing 100mbps by using a 4 wire (2 pair) ethernet cable that does not support gigabit at all and seeing if that will force it to 100mbps and just work? Probably have to home make a cable like that these days, though I think Philips still supply 100mbps only cables with their Hue Bridge. 2 pair wouldnā€™t support PoE though

I use a POE injector, ones that support AF (version needed) are 10 to 20 dollars. It is a 100MB port. 1Gbps would make zero sense. The max bandwidth of an ESP32-S3 is around 250Kbps. When I send a print job to my Bambu P1 via SFTP the transfer starts at around 500kb/s then slows down to 250kbs (roughly). This is a limitation of the ESP32-S3 which the P1 uses as its MCU. The main benefit of wired is latency.

Sadly, i am facing an intel issue with not reaching higher cpu c states when an USB full speed device is connected.

So my plan was to migrate to the SLZB-06 and power it over POE.

My questions are:

  • are the DOA ethernet issues solved in current Aliexpress batches?
  • Anyone of you having the SLZB-06 connected to POE, running Z2M in an docker and reaching higher cpu c states than C2/3 ?
