Im about 3 days into HA so im on a steep learning journey. Ive tried to find clear information but feels like there are contradictions everywhere.
i have a paradox mg5050 alarm with IP150. I want to get visibility of that system on my phone. The alarm has not been upgraded to insite gold. ( thats an option )… So right now the alarm is only good for local control.
i have a synology DS216+II Nas. Upgraded to 8gb ram. This is really just a file and backup device for me. But im looking at using it to run HA ( HAOS or HA Docker with supervisor to allow addon installation )
I followed this guide
And this results in a system that appears to run, has around 9 notification warnings which i believe is down to the version of docker that synology support (20.10). I was able to go to the add-ons section under configuration and install MTTQ . Plus MTTQ for Paradox ( PAI ). however i had issues getting those working, whilst they would start i would get crashes and annoying no logs being written. So i deleted them and uninstalled HA and Container Manager.
Ive now installed Container Manager BETA which is a newer version of docker (24.0.2) … The assumption being that the previous instructions might now work ( ill be trying this weekend ).
Ive read many posts that says docker HA wont support Supervisor … ive read many posts saying use HAOS and numerous pros and cons. .
Im a simple person needing a simple system, and the nas felt like a nice place to hep me get better visibility of my alarm ( maybe there are other ways ) but really I’m looking for guidance and advice around HAOS vs Docker. and then maybe some guides. Do the instructions in the link about actually work, the jobs.job file with the override “works” but i think its still causing issues. I actually donated to the site but feeling like even with the guide there is something im missing as i just cant get the MTTQ stuff working . My whole premise is that docker is lighter, you can install HA plus supervisor, It should work ( maybe better in the beta version ) and i need supervision to allow the Add-ons menu to appear to allow me to add MTTQ as a module …
You have plus model, so it should support virtual machines. Install VM manager and then install HAOS. Some guidelines are HERE. Although that topic is old VM settings are still valid. This way you’ll have fully working HA with all functions.
I’ve had HA installed in VM for a few years. I remember that i tried once and install HA in docker, just out of curiosity and if i remember correctly running speed wasn’t that much of a difference. Not to be noticed in any way. What’s better in VM is you have supervised HA with all functions, which is not the case in docker (at least not officially).
Oh…another thing: i hope you didn’t change default btrfs file system with ext4 when you bought / first started your syno - since if you use ext4 you can’t install VM manager. Then your only option would be to delete and re-create entire volume (that’s what i’ve had to do… )
The OP’s DS-216+ is coming up on 10 years old, and is probably living on borrowed time if it still has the original 2016 drives in it. Might be a good time to upgrade the Synology and drives, both to prevent data loss and also change the disk volume type if it isn’t already btrfs…
Yeah, i agree, but it’s not that cheap. If i’d buy a new one i’d take a model which supports ssd cache, which would mean roughly at least 500€… but speed difference with/without ssd is huuuuge…
Thanks … everyone says Docker with Supervisor isn’t supported, yet i see lots of guides including the one linked from Marius which sets up supervisor … Why is it that its assumed supervisor isn’t supported?
Yes, there is a way to make HA fully supervised, but not officially.
Supervised monitors HA, HAOS, all addons etc and makes sure all is ok and up to date. Without it you must manually update all, including HA, and if i recall correctly it must be done via command line. So, at the end all is easier with supervisor.
Even if something works (now) that doesn’t mean it’s supported.
If there is an issue, you can forget any official support and mostly will depend on yourself and very few community members running this type of install.
Docker is supported for HA Core installation, not for Supervisor.
And while it’s not the same you can run a ton of AddOns as separate docker containers and have HA Core too. Not the same experience, more work to setup and maintain, but that it officially supported.
I still use DS415 (a year older) and it’s working great. And 214, again still running OK. That shouldn’t be the issue as you always have option to replace when and if needed drives (some of mine RED ones are now 10+ years with 0 errors on them), running 24/7.
I’m in need of mttq configured and installed and I can’t see how to do that without access to the addons section which supervisor provides. Can you point me to any guides on how to install ha core and manually install mttq etc?
I’m looking to run pai ( paradox alarm integration )
