Hey Luka! I’ve finally got my TagTuner up and running, and I’m loving it. Now I get to make a bunch of “albums”, playlist cards, and the like.
Question for you: do you have any trouble getting the tag reader to read NFC tags when they’re stickered in the center of your little 3D-printed records? I printed one of those discs and stuck an NTAG215 sticker in the center, and I’ve programmed the tag in HA, but when I stand the disc in the slot on the device, the TagTuner does not consistently read it.
Most of the time, it doesn’t read anything. Sometimes, it seems to read the tag as being present and then immediately removed. Only on rare, rare occasion does it actually get a solid read and start playing the associated media.
This seems like the tag is right outside of the range of the PN532. And it’s only an issue with this particular orientation; if I lay the record flat, it works, and if I use other tags that are closer to the PN532, like plastic cards with NFC tags embedded within, they work too.
Just wondering if you’ve encountered this at all, and if you have any advice on how to more consistently keep the tags on these “discs” within the PN532’s range.
great to hear this! And your enclosure looks pretty classy
Frankly, I don’t have issues with these printed round cards on this case. But my early version does not have this support base inside - I’m sure you know what i’m talking about. You could try to remove it with pliers? I know it’s radical but it’s just an idea for you to consider.
You can also resize the round plate before printing. It’s 8cm if I remember correctly. Make it 7cm?
Recently I’ve bought true vinyl coasters but those are a bit bigger, over 10cm and I can confirm they don’t work in the slot. I’m using them like you’ve said, flat on the TagTuner. I’m still figuring out how to better handle those
A 7cm record didn’t work any better, so I took out most of the support podium within the bottom of the case. That lets the discs sit low enough for the PN532!
With that, I think that means my assembly is complete, so thanks again for helping me out!
Thanks for the feedback! I’ll take a closer look into this and try to figure out an upgraded design. Specially that I’d like to make those coasters work with central sticker. The new design will be also available to you as part of your lifetime support
